I don’t understand what planet anyone could think the Regent’s Park Legally Blonde could or should ever open in NYC, and I felt like I enjoyed it more than most! There is ‘no way’ (pun intended) unless they completely rethink the production it is appropriate for NYC in my opinion. It would be crucified.

The set deisgner from the muny legally blonde (@timmackabeedesign) posted on his story a picture of the what you want scene and said “Closing night…for now” and then on the bottom “stay tuned…” “#legallyblonde” and then the sunglasses emoji. What could this mean?

These type of shows have popular cast recordings and are super popular on social media/tik tok but they don’t make any money commercially because their teenager/young adult audience can’t really afford Broadway. Be More Chill found this out the hard way. A few other shows have, too. Do some fun immersive legally blonde off- broadway next summer for two months and call it a fun day! I just don’t think it’ll ever make money on Broadway (which is not saying it won’t make gobs of money elsewhere)

As of Summer 2019 there were plans simmering for a revival, but obviously the pandemic changed everything. I’m sure there’s interest, and to those saying it flopped originally, yes it did in NYC, but was wildly successful in London, and has since became a staple in community and regional theatre. I think a mid-sized revival has legs.

The only way I see it maybe happening in some crazy reality is if someone like Lizzo or another A+ list non-broadway star comes in and gives the performance of a lifetime to drum up mega hype. Lizzo or Ariana Grande are really the only names I can think of who could meet the box office appeal and talent right in the crosshairs. Dove Cameron couldn’t even sell out Clueless (for the ten performance she showed up to).

I had the pleasure of seeing the Muny production. Every cast member was great, and the director made some fun changes (such as the marching band at Harvard being replaced by a fashion show display). It honestly was the most fun I've had with a show at the Muny.
It's not a perfect show by any means, but a lot of the score is fantastic (Gay or European is a modern classic). It's a defining musical for Gen Z, who were raised on the show through school/community productions. In 5-10 years, when that generation is more financially independent, I could definitely see a revival being successful.

Genuine question - would a show like Legally Blonde be more viable going straight to a tour? The market of teens/etc who can make a trip to NYC is definitely very limited, but a tour would make it more feasible for that market to buy tickets and then once the market is exhausted they move to the next stop anyway. I’ve always wondered why after Broadway Be More Chill opted for singular productions in Chicago and London instead of a national tour. I figure I must be missing something, is the market not even viable for a tour?

I agree with all of this. Mean Girls is doing gangbusters on tour. Beetlejuice will sell like hot cakes on tour. The non-equity Legally Blonde tour keeps going out because it keeps making gobs of dough. I think Be More Chill could have made Tepper and Joe retire if they’d toured it instead of wasting millions on the ego idea that “for a show to really be a show it had to play broadway.”

I spoke with Jerry Mitchell in 2019 and he told me that they were currently working on a Broadway revival at that time. I can’t recall the details but he implied Dove Cameron for Elle but again this is several years ago. I’m sure COVID could have destroyed these plans though.. but he really wanted a revival and he said he knew there was an appetite for one on Broadway.

I love the show. It's pure fluff. I feel the way others have already stated. A Broadway caliber tour bringing it all over North America would be incredible for this show. I feel like it would make tons of money all over. And then maybe bring it into New York for a 12 week engagement just to say that a played Broadway and then keep it touring. I know there is an audience for it but I don't think an open-ended Broadway run is the way to go.

Exactly what I was thinking - take the Bring It On route. Tour some major cities, culminating with a limited engagement on Broadway.

I just don't think - design/direction wise - what they could do to make this show feel fresh and new.

It's been done a lot regionally. We saw the muny production wed and didn't love it. We've seen a few regional and collegiate productions, the UK all adding technology/phones/social media/multi-ethnic casting/video use so this felt dated as we had seen all these "updates" before.
The muny casting was almost a copy of the Regent production - and for legally blonde, was too frenetic with dance-team movement even on the massive muny stage -- and to the teens we had in tow. The original production was more focused and told the story where the muny felt overshot. An odd above ground pool and fashion show does not a revival make.

Dove had terrible attendance at Clueless, her understudy went on more than she did. Dove absolutely cannot handle a role as demanding as Elle.

OBC Legally Blonde worked because they had an incredible cast of very, very capable performers. They handled the show beautifully. It was a lot of fun.
A great cast like that makes it look easy. Most regional casts, as well as some of the later tours felt slowed down and like they were really working hard. I felt that way with the Regent's Park cast. It was... Forced. It also didn't help that some of them were doing impressions of the OBC, vocally.
Would love to see a proper Broadway revival, but it's going to be tough to cast. I also wouldn't want to see it changed much. It works well, as-is, with a capable cast.

The tour will be at the Tilles Center on Long Island on December 10. There's an LIRR station(Greenvale) less than 10 minutes away.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks LB's book needs a ton of changes. It removes Elle's agency and there are a lot of ethnic jokes.

I've seen clips online and I'm put off by the almost complete lack of a set and the LCD screen constantly flashing "ELLE WOODS"
