I dont know anything about the actress who was cast, but Im so excited that a WOC got the role. This is progress, people!

A tweet from @msmorganjarrett sums it up perfectly:

As a white-skinned redhead, I have very strong feelings about #TheLittleMermaid. Ariel changed my ginger world. The mean "jokes" ended. I became envied for my hair.

And you know what? I want little black girls to experience that same feeling with new Ariel.

I agree with your message 100% ... I only worry bc if you look at Beauty and the Beast they didn’t change it same with Jasmine from Aladdin... I don’t want this to back fire on Disney

Look at MJ in Spider-Man originally she is with red hair and when Zendaya got the role it changed and some liked the change the other didn’t

My problem is that Disney needs to be spending their money on NEW films and getting back to animation and stop it with these unnecessary remakes that nobody is asking for and, going by the critics, are just not very good.

You would think after basically becoming an unstoppable monopoly Disney would be willing to take some risks on animated and live action films to engage audiences, yet here we are with primarily remakes and sequels on their production slate for the next two years. I can't even find myself too excited about this Ariel casting because I remember McCarthy is playing Ursula, and I'm a big Chloe x Halle fan.

Some are good, some are bad and most of them have come pretty close to hitting the billion dollar mark WW at the box office. Only one has done okish (Dumbo) and only one has outright flopped (the Alice sequel) so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for them to stop churning them out x

Halle has acted..... shes been on Grownish for the past two seasons.

As for the remakes I heard somewhere that Walt Disney himself wanted the classic Disney movies remade every however many years so every generation gets to experience (for the first time) like the kids did when the disney classics first came out. Not sure how true that is but I believe it. And it makes sense. Otherwise disney would have just made the most popular movies live action and not the less popular ones like Jungle Book and Dumbo

How do you explain to little girls and boys that the red haired white girl is now a African American and not the same as the dvd they have watched.

Does Disney plan to pull the original cartoon and pretend that it never existed, do the rides in Tokyo , Orlando , Anaheim need to close.

so many unanswered questions

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

You misunderstood Walt Disney’s mission.  He wanted to re-release his films theatrically every 7 years so a new generation can see them, which is how many of my generation saw these classic films like MARY POPPINS and PETER PAN in movie theatres in the 1970s.

This mission was carried over when home video surfaced in the 80s and his animated classics started making their home video debuts.  Every 7 years the films are re-released on home video (then VHS and Beta; now it’s DVD, Blu-ray, download, etc.).

Film remakes didn’t exist during his lifetime (he died in 1966) so that idea was never on his radar.

It's a cartoon half fish. I think the little boys and girls in today's generation are significantly more evolved on race than we were, not to mention they understand the word "remake". They'll be fine.

Having said that, agree with Jordan. I want new stories. :/

While I think it’s wonderful more girls are going to feel seen and represented by this new Mermaid remake, my bigger concern is the whole sacrifice-your-entire-identity-so-a-Prince-will-like-you message this story tells.

1. I hate this story for that very reason. Its an awful message.

2. I love that they cast a POC! I doubt too many people/children are going to care, and those that do? Too damn bad. Dont watch it.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I completely agree. While I do support this casting and am appalled at the racist comments re: casting on social media, I do wish Disney would start doing more original works again. I can't remember the last time they did a movie that wasn't some sort of reboot, sequel, etc. Really disappointing. But since this is happening I guess I'm just going to look forward to who's cast as King Triton (PLEASE NORM LEWIS OR BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL). Ursula, Sebastian, etc. I can only hope people will shut up with their racist comments and will make up their minds once the movie actually comes out.

They stopped vaulting when bluray came along, they are now available all the time. Thought they do still release a new edition every 7 years x

I hope this is sarcasm. I guess then all productions of Wicked need to implement changes as well, ever since Brittney Johnson went on for the first time as Glinda, and ever since she was promoted to standby. How are you going to explain to audience members why Glinda looks different? Maybe try to learn how to raise people with open minds and don't promote racism or the idea that characters have to look a specific way. I saw something on Twitter that said the original Hans Christian Anderson tale had Ariel as being GREEN. So I say deal with it. Unless this is sarcasm. Then ignore what I wrote.

Disney have had TERRIBLE luck with trying 'new' things the last 10 years, every single one of them has failed spectacularly. Tomorrowland, Joh Carter, Wrinkle in Time, Nutcracker have all lost millions and in some cases 100's of millions of dollars.

Even newish titles like Zooropia and Tangled didn't make massive amounts at the box office.

They had big wins with Frozen and Moana and lesser success with Wreck it Ralph and Big Hero 6, but they have had pretty bad luck other wise.

I hope so too. Let's see...How do people adjust to a black actor playing Kristoff on Broadway in Frozen? Or that the primary understudy for Anna is also black (and is the adult Anna follows a white child actress Anna)...when they look nothing like the animated versions in the original movie. They say...oh the actor is black and move on. Who cares?  If they are talented, you just forget in like two minutes and just go with it. These are dramatic representations of the animated film..not clones.

You can say what you want about Disney but I have to just applaud their efforts to diversify their actors as we move forward in time.

When I first heard the casting news, I’ll be honest. I had two thoughts. My first was “who?” And then “can she sing?”. Never did the color of her skin make it into my thoughts. People seriously need to move on if that’s all they can focus on.

Because many people don't applaud diversity, they want 'the good old days' and 'making things great again' remember x

While Tangled was a moderate hit, Zootopia was a big hit for Disney. $350 million domestically and over a billion world wide.
