An entire chorus of people would dismiss it online as a PR stunt even if it was genuine.

Personally, I didn't take any issue with her having sound complaints about Hell's Kitchen.
What I did take issue with was her re-litigating the issue again for no reason, calling Kecia the B word, attacking her credentials, and invoking Audra McDonald's name for absolutely no reason at all.
She took a situation where she initially came out, in the fall, looking like the more mature party – and has now chosen to come out, purely with her words in The New Yorker, looking just petty, small, and sad.
But even such, I think all the social media overreaction (most of which just amounts to clout-chasing) is still laughably ridiculous.
For the record, the interview was given some time ago- Patti didn’t whip all this up again out of boredom, the interview was just finally published.
Ignore what problem exactly, though? Her being self-righteous and cruel? Are people actually arguing you are not allowed to call someone a bad word or rudely compare your careers/insult them? Or more specifically, that it should *punishable*?

To be accurate, she didn't invoke Audra McDonald's name. The interviewer specifically brought her up, which is the reason she was introduced to the discussion. It's in the quote at the very start of this thread.
"I mentioned that Audra McDonald—the Tony-decorated Broadway star—had given the video supportive emojis. “Exactly,” LuPone said.... "

She could have simply said it’s not racist to call a show too loud - get a life ! That is what I would say
The circulating letter should be demanding Lewis apologize for attacking Lupone’s character, it is besmirching, way worse than calling someone a bitch ! It is clear Lupone was disgusted because her character was assassinated over a simple volume request

I think I would die of cringe if this happened.
Patti has burned some bridges. The only option she has is to own it.
It's a shame many people never learn that silence is golden. Doesn't mean, of course, you have to keep quiet your entire life. But sometimes thinking twice before opening one's mouth pays off.

You’re not aware of the racist tropes about Black people being “too loud”? And it wasn’t just a matter of asking to adjust the volume — it was refusing to sign the playbill and saying, “They’re too loud.”
I don’t know what Patti’s intent was, other than being mean, but I don’t think it’s surprising that someone would see racist overtones in those comments, intentional or not. She dug this hole herself.
It’s like WSYWAT all over again. In liberal spaces, people of color will never not benefit from crying racism, and white people will never not benefit from jumpimg on the bandwagon.
I truly don’t think race ever had ANYTHING to do with LuPone’s comments. Patti isn’t racist, she’s just a b*tch. But sure, let’s call it racist because we can feel better about ourselves for being publicly outraged about it and adding our names to the list of “not racist” people. I mean, if you don’t sign you must be part of the problem, right?
This is an amazing (and I don’t mean that in a good way), jaw dropping, unprecedented moment in our community. A large group of hysterical people seem to genuinely believe that Patti, the most legendary Broadway star alive today basically needs to be destroyed. I genuinely thought that something like the Great Comet incident could never be repeated and yet it’s happening with so much more fury, activism and outrage than I ever remember before. This is a war - and I hope people find a way to stand up against this.
I actually wish Audra would step in and try to calm it all down. She is likely the only person people will listen to. Audra, if as you claimed there is no rift between you and Patti surely you don’t want to watch your friend be destroyed for her imperfections. If you are Patti’s friend as you suggested I think she could use the help.

You’re correct. Racism is mental illness. I’m glad you’ve looked in the mirror and publicly called yourself out.
Audra has no reason to stop it as this whole thing only helps her both personally and professionally.

It is so to the benefit of POC to exert emotionally and mental energy away from the art to deal with the BS. We cry it, we create it. This industry doesn’t have any of it. We make this all up. It’s all our fault. Sure. If you think the Theater isn’t a reflection of this country you literally are in denial.

No. Not Audra's responsibility to save Patti from herself.

Yes, racism is a mental illness.
And so is thinking everything is racist, even when 90% of the time it isn't.

Generalized statements have entered the chat. We are talking about this one instance. Please show me the 90% you speak of. She can have freedom of speech, but we can’t? Make it make sense. If Kecia Lewis is a bitch, Patti is a racist. That’s how words work and Patti started this chapter of the drama.

Why would it be Audra's responsibility to "calm it all down?" She isn't the one who caused the storm!
It's mind blowing to me that this is now turning on her as if she's the one who couldn't hold her tongue in an interview. At the beginning of this thread it was "Patti's just Patti" but now Audra should step in and "save" Patti from Patti? You guys really don't get how that sounds. By the admission of half the people in this thread Patti doesn't need saving.

I've said already that I had an issue with Patti calling Kecia a bitch. And guess what? I also have an issue with Kecia calling Patti a racist. This habit of calling people racist for absolutely no reason is no less stupid than calling people profane names for no reason. Just makes everyone look like petulant children.
I think this might play out one more week and end after the Tonys. And then no one will give a rats ass. Patti has work lined up. She is not going anywhere. I hope she is spending the weekend in her Stephen Sondheim pool. SHE EARNED IT!
It is the begining of pride month. Happy pride everyone! My divas have always been a part of my gay makeup. And they will always continue to be. Going to town to see some drag tonight. I hope there is a good Patti out there.

Ensemble1698878795 it is so nice to read all of your messages from yesterday and know that some of us Black folks and co-conspirators actually understand what's happening along with the 500 plus of us who signed the open letter. Thank you for eating these folks up so effortlessly. Also yeah, SmokyLady might be Black but she certainly is an old school elder, who embodies all skinfolks ain't kin folks. She mentioned something about a directtv guide LOL, and I said ohhhh I understand alot about this lady from that one comment. Because she is quick to amen a white person on this thread, and that's all we ever need is one dissenting voice for them to jump onto and see this Black person agrees with our racist asses. You other coloreds are wrong. Anyway, thanks for your responses. It's been pure hell in here. But like always we MOVE.
PS Also, Steve Sanders, Ke3, TevinThree...folks who truly seem to just get it.
