...is it bad that I'm really excited?

WUT
It was neat seeing the movie, but the live musical is so much better. It just has so much more energy live. Can't see a sequel doing well.
Do we really need this?
They need to update their stats... the new BatB movie has made double MM's $600m and is still in release.

Are musicals now back in vogue with movie audiences?
More recently -- there were LaLaLand and Beauty & the Beast. To be released on Christmas Day, 2017 is Greatest Showman ( Jackman/Efron/Michelle Willams and Pasek&Paul). Seven months later, Universal is releasing the sequel to Mamma Mia! in July 2018...and then Wicked in December 2019. Two are original movie musicals ( LaLaLand and Greatest Showman) while 3 are adapted/inspired by stage musicals and/or film adaptations of stage musicals.
Will we see some theatre stars/film & theatre stars in these movie musicals? Emma Stone was a replacement cast to Michelle Williams in Cabaret and won an Oscar for LaLaLand. Josh Gad, Audra McDonald and Ian Mckellen were in Beauty & the Beast. Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Keala Settle and Will Swenson will feature in Greatest Showman. Casting for the Universal releases have not been announced.
If Pierce Brosnan returns for this, please don't let him sing. I remember CBS Sunday Morning did a segment on him back in 2014, and at one point, he talked about how he’d be driving his kids to school while practicing the song, ‘S.O.S.’, and even they didn’t like what they heard.

According to the trade paper The Hollywood Reporter, Pierce might be back for this sequel/prequel --

"Much of the original movie's cast, which included Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, are expected to return to sing more ABBA songs.
The storyline, according to sources, is both a prequel and a sequel. It will be set in the present with the returning castmemebers, while new actors would play younger versions of Streep, Brosnan and Firth for part of the story that is set in the past."
I wonder if Meryl will be back. If so it would be her first sequel, no? Also she's currently in production for another musical, Mary Poppins Returns. So would she want to do two musicals back to back??
Two musicals AND both sequels.
Wait it's a prequel, even though the entire cast will have aged nearly a decade by time it's released??

All sequels are bad. The original was beyond bad. So this should be way beyond bad.
Wow! I hope the people who like this sort of thing like it. Personally, I'd rather listen to I.B.S.
Cue the Donna Murphy-does-her-singing OT/on- topic topic.

This was my first thought...whoever wrote this seriously needs a double check and whoever allowed this to be printed with a 100% wrong piece of info needs a talking to.
But seriously...WHY is this needed?? The first may have made a good chunk of change but it was terrible...

It's partially a prequel. It's set in the present day with flashbacks to the past. Younger actors will portray the younger versions of the actors in the flashbacks.
Also, MARY POPPINS RETURNS has a December 2018 release which is a few months after this MAMMA MIA! sequel is released (Summer 201. I'm sure Meryl will have another film released in between.
I assume they'll have to finally answer the "who's the father?" question.
^ They're saving that for the third film.
Theee possible fathers, three movies.
Streep might get her first Razzie award if she agrees to do this.

Well, that is how prequels worked last I checked.
I REALLY don't want to know what happened next.
William Goldman once said " all sequels are whoring".
In this case I tots agree.
uh what abba songs are even left at this point???
Thank you @BrodyFosse123, that makes a lot more sense. I was imagining more of the hilariously bad segments when they dressed up Brosnan and Firth in rocker/hippie clothing.
