It wasn't just the children that made Matilda special. It was the dark, funny, and sophisticated look at childhood and growing up. This was not only shown through the children, but through the adults as well. As someone who just started college to study film, an art form where having a steady job is not always definite, I entirely associated with the show. It is moving and entertaining in ways Kinky Boots was not. KB was overloaded with fluff, both in its book and score, and overhyped performances. Tim Minchin and Bertie Carvel were the most deserving in their categories. There is no doubt in my mind that Matilda deserved that award and I am glad to know it will be sticking around for a long time for more audiences to experience.
Hey, BROADWAYDISNEYFAN, you have no idea what 'overlooked' means.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
You didn't know that Matilda would be fine at the end and stay with Miss Honey? I knew that 5 minutes in and have never read the book nor seen the movie.

Yes..and that the cartoon-style villains as the parents and headmistress were not the bad guys - and were going to lose.
I am certainly not putting down anyone for liking Matilda more than Kinky Boots -but the idea that Kinky Boots is so predictable and Matilda is not is just silly.
I liked Matilda, I liked KB -- maybe a little more. Maybe. I just don't like silly arguments.

Ummmmm....yeah I do:
1) Best Score-DEFIENTELY Matilda. This just got Best Score and here they are singing, "Yeah" OVER AND OVER again. 2) Best Cherography-How did that happened?! That should have been Pippin's. Pippin was huge circus things! Did KB have circus stuff? No! And even if Pippin didn't get it, Matilda should have gotten it. Bruce and Revolting Children blew my mind. 3) Best Orchestrations-Cinderella should have won that! The waltz and Loneliness of Evening sounded amazing!
dramamama611, was that addressed to me? I can't really answer that question objectively because I've loved the book since I was a child and knew the story already. So yes, I knew what would happen to Matilda. I also knew the plot of Kinky Boots beforehand, having seen the film. What was predictable was the script and music. It felt like many musicals I've already seen before. It felt very paint-by-numbers and emotionally manipulative. I preferred Matilda for its less in-your-face sentimentality. It's not a perfect musical (I found the adult characters too cartoonish), but I still was far more engaged and delighted by Matilda.
Ah well, I don't begrudge Cyndi her award tonight. I <3 her.
As selected by the Tony voters, the better show "Kinky Boots" won. "That's all" (Miranda Priestley)
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
People were just so "up in arms" over awarding another British show. Kinky Boots sucks as shown by that awful, awful song they chose to perform. You're going to award them best score and then they perform a 10min song that has one lyric line? So stupid.
I think Matilda was just too smart and clever for American audiences. Bertie not winning still boggles my mind. People are idiots.
Also I have to say, after listening to Jerry Mitchell talk about the conveyor belt choreography for hours on Sirius XM, I was very underwhelmed by the use of them. Creative idea, but rather dull execution.
When something is "overlooked" it DIDN'T get recognized for something. KB couldn't have been overlooked for choreo or score because it won for those very things.
You mean that MATILDA was overlooked.
So, NO, you don't know what the word means.

And only theater people know either GG or Drowsy. The average folk do not.

"And he honestly questions why he is so disliked here"
I'm not but I have honestly just stopped caring what you guys think of me. You guys want to call me a troll? Do it. I have been on Auto Pilot with this board for months now and you bitchy jaded shattered dream queens are just boring me now. I will continue to post here cause i love Broadway but if you think i give 2 s**** about what you think of me personally then you people are complete idiots. NEXT
