There's no reason to despair. The greatest musical creation of all-time didn't win the top award, but Follies has been treated very well by history, and will continue to be. Is Follies (or Matilda) any less because it did not win?
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
"Is Follies (or Matilda) any less because it did not win?"
Well, no. But that's rationality for you :p
I am sad Matilda didn't win the big one or best score, but congratulations to both Kinky and Matilda on their awards haul across a variety of categories and I hope both continue to do well at the box office as a result.
Matilda was not robbed. On the contrary, this pretentious piece of overhyped Brit bullcrap is robbing unsuspecting theatre goers of $150+ per ticket eight times a week. Now all you people who were so absolutely aghast when it was proposed that Kinky might actually win can just go suck it.
Haven't seen either yet. Last night, I had no idea what the kids were screaming (singing?) in Matilda except for the occasional word they put on the screen. Maybe they should put up all the lyrics? Kinky Boots made me want to see it! I thought that Once number would never end. Is there a single number in that show that won't just put me to sleep? Even that one, which is the most lively I've heard from the show, was just dull and monotonous.
As a Brit I guess I was supposed to cheer for Matilda but after watching the show in the UK I thought it was brilliantly put together, lyrics are fantastic, the cast were great and it had some fantastic moments but it just didn't grab me (though at 34 I guess I'm not it's target audience). For anyone to be calling the show 'pretentious' though says more about the person poster than it does the show. The show was smartly written and designed and avoided generic.
Kinky Boots is a lot of fun (though the British accents apart from Starks are hysterical) yet felt generic, the score was fun but uninteresting and the book lost the charm of the film. However it's a crowd pleaser, it made me smile.
Was Matilda robbed? Probably not, but when it lost out to a generic crowd pleaser it's a little sad. Honestly I preferred Hands on a Hardbody to both this year.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
Were we seriously all surprised when Kinky Boots won? It was no shock to me. As much as I love Kinky Boots, I wanted Matilda to win just because I knew Kinky would sweep the rest of the awards and I wanted Matilda to win something big.
Thw worst part is "EVERYBODY SAY YEAH YEAH" is the best number in the show. How Pathetic is that? That song is the best this show has to offer? How this show made it past Chicago I will never know. Its generic and mediocre and one of the worst best musical winners. Memphis was better than this crap.
"Raise You Up" was a better song and should have been performed on the telecast.
Agreed about KINKY's pleasant but generic blandness and lack of originality. Anybody notice how "Everybody Say Yeah" -- those specific lyrics, at least -- had just been sung by the Young Rascals doing a hit from decades ago? A telling point.
MATILDA simply had more creative spark. KINKY wasn't bad, just a little too cookie-cutter for my taste. But I can understand how some voters wanted to vote for something less complicated and more sparkly.
Actually, had I been a voter, I'd have opted for A CHRISTMAS STORY as Best Musical; MATILDA would have been a close second.
I can't say I am surprised at the results, but it makes me sad. Yep, Memphis officially beat Sweeney Todd. Oh well. It is what it is.
That's now the third time I've seen Everybody Say Yeah, and if I have to ever see it again I may possibly explode. It really is an embarrassment to songwriting. Sigh.

I'm disappointed Matilda didn't win score, musical, and actor but ultimately those losses do nothing to diminish my love for the show.
I obviously am a fan of Kinky Boots, I will be seeing Matilda in July and I can't wait- however, I say tha meaning I cnn't wait to see the full production, because the performances I've seen thus far haven't really done anything for me. I've seen Kinky Bots twice, and it is a real crowd pleaser, to say the least. The reason they are using "Everybody Say Yeah" is because, IMO, it gives nothing away- the finale is far superior, but gives away some surprises related to the plot. If Matilda's producers would have let Bertie in the featured category and not petition for leading actor he probably would've won- his little bit in Matilda's performance last evening made me extremely excited to see him! Having been at the Hirschfeld twice, the energy and crowd under that roof was probably hard to overlook for Tony voters in the audience. Again, I cannot wait to see Matilda, but I enjoyed by Kinky Boots experiences, and as some have mentioned regarding Matilda, when I left it was hard for me to picture anything else winning.
Yet to see Kinky Boots, saw Matilda in London last year and the show left me giddy with joy, apart from some lyrics which where hard to understand I enjoyed the show. And being 45 I was in no way the target audience.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

I have seen both Matilda and Kinky Boots 3 times. I really, REALLY wanted to love Kinky Boots as much as everyone else did. But I didn't enjoy it at all! I was MUCH more captured and entertained by Matilda all 3 times. I for sure think Matilda should have one.

All three times?
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

What are you talking about? Les Miserables DID win Best Musical!
The reason they are using "Everybody Say Yeah" is because, IMO, it goves nothing away- the finale is far superior, but gives away some surprises related to the plot.
Well...but does it really? I mean, really? From the moment Lola enters the factory, I knew EXACTLY what the finale would look like. And hopefully, it makes a lot more sense now than it did in Chicago. Even late in the run, the finale seemed to have been choreographed and staged, but the book ended in a baffling train wreck of unexplained resolutions.
