On ''Maybe Happy Ending's'' website, Darren Criss is still prominently mentioned and pictured on the home page, but there's no bio or upfront acknowledgment of Andrew Barth Feldman's 9-week stint, beginning tomorrow. If the plan were to downplay Criss' absence, they could have promoted their Asian-American understudies.
Then again, Feldman was announced July 24, and the show's producers have yet to address or acknowledge the casting controversy, let alone B.D. Wong's letter of protest, signed by 2,400, or Conrad Ricamora's scholarship fund for male Asian actors, which raised $65,000 (and whose contributors include Helen J Shen & Michael Arden).
Oh, and as for the idea for creating a concert to showcase Asian-American talent, I direct your attention to Broadway Sessions, Ben Cameron's long-running, award-winning musical-theater variety that plays at the Green Room 42 in NYC. This past May, it featured all five standbys from "Maybe Happy Ending": Hannah Kevitt, Claire Kwon, Daniel May, plus Criss' understudies: Stephen Huynh and Christopher James Tamayo. Below. some video coverage from BroadwayWorld.com. There's no lack of talent among Asian-Americans; only a lack of opportunities for them to shine.
