I saw the show last night with Kerstin and she was a marvel to behold. Her voice is beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes. I don’t know how long Lauren is out but if you get the chance to see Kerstin I highly recommend it. It would be a shame to miss her.
Being out of town doesn’t really give you too many options if a principal is out for the night. You can either get a refund and miss the show or take a chance on the understudy. I always take the chance and have never been disappointed.
This show is lavish and a delight. Very happy I saw it!
But the problem with "Mean Girls" isn't that the music is too niche. It's that it's hard to imagine anyone choosing to listen to this clamorous Broadway pop beyond the pool of adolescent theater rats dying to be cast in the show.
I apologize in advance for a clear hijack of a MFL thread, but I say this *all the time* about contemporary Bway scores. They say something like DEAR EVAN HANSON is a pop score, but pop music hasn't sounded like that (piano light rock pop) since the 90s. So, congrats? Bway wrote a "contemporary" score for a sound from 20 years ago?
Ok back to MFL. Bummed to hear Lauren has been out (especially at Tony time). The run just started; I wonder if this will be common.

Lauren Ambrose isn’t performing today either.

A lot of tony voters are in town...3 missed weekend performances is not great right before the ceremony. I hope enough voters see her!
Today is Eliza Doolittle day and I wanted to see the matinee though show was sold out as of this morning and last night there was 1 premium seat available for today's matinee.
Stubhub was only selling $300+ tix as well even until 3pm. :/
So if Lauren is out, was there a cancellation line at the Lincoln Center box office for those who want to see the show with Kerstin Anderson? Now looking back I should have just taken my chance and went to the theater.
I've seen the show already with Lauren but would love to see her understudy perform (though not at premium prices over $300!)

I will say having seen a clip of her (Lauren) she has a nice operatic voice. And her acting is great. I really hope she gets the tony. But there a many that can do this and do it better. Like Laura
Personally Funny Girl should be produced with Lauren because she will be perfect.
I hope they don't do Funny Girl with Lauren. She's a wonderful actress and there's a ton of roles that I would love to see her play (Nancy in Oliver and The Baker's Wife in Into the Woods to name a couple), but there's nothing about her to me to suggest that she would be a brilliant Fanny Brice.
If they bring Funny Girl back to Broadway, I would love it if Natasha Barnes was Fanny. I saw her in Funny Girl on the West End and she blew my socks off. This was with me having only 30 minutes of sleep after flying overnight to London (my first time) in 2016. Her performance energized me. The backstory of how she became the lead in the show is also pretty fascinating. I know they likely wouldn’t use a British actress as Fanny for a Broadway revival of this though.
Lauren Ambrose was cast as Fanny in the 2011 revival of Funny Girl but sadly it was cancelled due to the uncertainty of the economy at the time.

I wasn't endorsing his statement by quoting it; I haven't heard the score. I just thought that "the pool of adolescent theater rats" deserved some kind of recognition for creative nastiness.

I doubt we'll ever going to see Ambrose as Fanny Brice outside of a concert setting. I personally don't see it...maybe eight years ago when it was being rumored, but certainly not now.

Did anyone see Kerstin Anderson as Eliza this past weekend? I thought she was excellent in the recent Sound of Music tour so I'm anxious to hear how her Eliza is being received.
I have some friends that work at the theatre and they said the understudy had a lovely voice and smart comic timing.
Updated On: 5/22/18 at 12:58 AMI saw her and thought she did a great job. I was a fan of the whole production. It was the first time I ever cared about Henry Higgins. And there was chemistry between them.

According to this tweet from Broadway Understudies Ambrose is still out tonight. I hope she’s feeling better (assuming the post about vocal problems is correct) and she returns to the show soon!

Tough call. If Lauren has missed the last four, or five, not likely to come back for two performances today. Telecharge showing next three sold out except for three premiums for the matinee.
I think I'll go. Saw Lauren in previews and will be back to see her again. I might be witnessing birth of a star in her understudy.
In this long SAG-AFTRA interview first linked on another thread, Lauren talks about how grueling the role, more for all the dialogue than the singing. As this is her first musical, unproven how her voice will hold up.

LCT might be getting a little worried.

I think Sher heard what he wanted to hear in her singing. She has a sweet soprano in the clips I've heard, but I can't think of another show that is as demanding of a classically trained soprano as MFL is. If her absence is caused by vocal problems [not illness] and there is a wonderful understudy by all reports, LCT may have to make a tough decision.
"My name is Ethel Merman. My agent told me to come down here to be fitted for my Eliza costumes. Thank you. What? 8 shows a week? No problem".
When do they usually make the call about understudies? I'm supposed to see the show tonight, but will want to exchange if she's not in.

LOL. Well, she wasn't a classically trained soprano and couldn't sing the MFL songs. But she certainly had the kind of voice that could have sung all night!!
