I remember reading that in the shows contract with the Broadway league, they couldn't make a movie for 5 or 6 years.

That seems totally illogical to me. It's a British show that's produced by the RSC and a transfer. Sure, it's closing New Year's Day here, but its flagship production in the West End isn't showing any signs of stopping anytime soon. With all that being the case, why would any Broadway League ruling have any sort of impact on the timetable of a film that is going to be made in another country.

Jorge is close, a film cannot be released until 6 years after the show's Broadway premiere. Production can start whenever. However, I'm not sure if this applies to Matilda, because it's a West End transfer....

What makes Matilda interesting are the 4(or 3) girls playing Matilda. That wouldn't translate well in a movie.

For those of us that have seen more than one production with more than one Matilda, many Matildas are interesting for sure. For the majority of the population who generally sees a Broadway show only once and therefore only sees one Matilda, I can't imagine what the problem would be to cast just one girl.

The most difficult thing to translate IMO, is it's incredible set. It's so visually appealing, and I feel like without it the movie would just be like the '96 movie, but with singing. Also, I feel like the score would be changed a bit... I can't see Revolting Children working, and that's one of the show's shining moments.

Why wouldn't Revolting Children work? I feel like I can see that as a big triumphant set piece, not necessarily contained in the classroom. Many of the other songs are much more introspective.

Well, it was supposed to start filming this year. Clearly not the case anymore. And with Mary Poppins 2 and Wicked coming out on Christmases 2018 and 2019, sounds like the movie will be released in 2020.

Anymore updates. Wasn't it supposed to start filming this year? So im guessing they are pushing it off. Are they waiting until Groundhog Day is up on its feet?

I hope this comes about in some form at some time. Maybe they can do direct to tv adaptation on free form or for Netflix. I could see it doing really well as a stop motion animation film.

They were having rights issues, states on imdb. So im guessing they weren't allowed to make the moviez

Adapting Matilda the musical for a movie will face a similar problem that the book had when adapted for the 96 movie; IT DOESN'T FOLLOW A TRADITIONAL PLOT. There is a through line of following the life of Matilda when she starts school and her interactions with Miss Honey and Miss Trunchbull, but its more a series vignettes instead of building toward a climax. In the musical Matilida's powers aren't introduced until halfway through the 2nd act, which yes aligns with the book, but it wouldn't work on screen. Instead the first 2 thirds of the musical and book focus on the everyday goings on in Matilda's life and how horrible it is.
The 96 adaption much to the chagrin of the Dahl estate introduces Matilda's powers in the first 3rd of the movie and her use of them grows as the terrors thrust upon her and her fellow students by Miss Trunchbull escalates. In the movie it is Matilda who saves the girl who is thrown by Miss Trunchbull with her powers, while in the musical and book she is just a bystander. Add to that of the score is made up of mostly character songs, which are usually the first to go in a film adaption. Very little of the score advances the plot, but instead it mostly comments on it. The only 3 truly plot advancing songs are Naughty, Bruce, and Revolting Children. If it were to be adapted Minchin, Kelly, and whoever they hire as a screen writer will truly have to tear apart the show and rebuild it from the ground up for a film adaption.
