She sounds fine in the clip. But, it does not seem to me that she is actually playing the piano. Did the other actors playing Carole King play the piano? Is there an Equity rule that affects when an actor can play an instrument on stage (I know they can like in Once and Doyle's Sweeney Todd and Company)?
No one has actually played the piano - when I saw the show I sat in the mezz. and could see that the piano onstage had no strings in it - but some actors are a lot better at faking it than others.
I was JUST about to ask all the above...I don't believe she's playing in the show itself, but there that sneak peek performance she just gave...does Melissa herself actually play in general?? If so, DDDAAMMNN...I missed that skill of hers. But yes, no "Carole" has actually played in this show, it would be mighty insane to require that. Once is a little different, that show was always conceived from day one around the idea that the cast be their own orchestra.
I saw her second show, last Friday. She was really fabulous, great vocals and acting. She was a bit hesitant at times but I think that will fade as she gets more comfortable in the role.
I had for quite sometime been dreamcasting Melissa in this role and I got to see her last Friday as well and she was as fantastic as I'd hoped and more. Her vocals were wonderful and she does a beautiful job connecting with the role acting wise. Her chemistry with the company was wonderful especially with Evan Todd, which apparently according to him at stage door they've known each other for quite sometime. If there was any hesitation like wheelsinmotion mentioned it'll fade as she gets comfortable. But, Melissa is perfect in the role and I can't wait to see her again a few times.
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
I saw what was, I think, her 6th performance and I thought she was lovely. I'd never seen the show before so I've nothing to compare her to with her predecessors, but both her acting and singing were great.
Her fake piano playing, however, was not, and it distracted me. lol - but mostly because of this thread, I was specifically looking for it. IIt wasn't bothersome enough to take anything away from the performance or show, though! I may very well see it again before her run ends.
