So Melissa Benoist, Supergirl and Glee star, just cancelled an appearance at a UK con, and according to the organizers the reason is her being cast in Beautiful on Broadway... safe to assume, as Carole King.

The con is in 3 weeks, so announcement should be any day now.

Oh boy.. I had no interest in seeing Beautiful but she's wonderful. I might just suffer through it if this is confirmed.

Wow, people seem really upset that she had to cancel. However, this will be an excellent opportunity for her and one no actor would turn down.

Like who? Was that an excuse to get a dig at the show?

Obviously "no one actor would turn it down" was hyperbole. I'm just saying any young actor still trying to establish their rep would love to tackle on this role if they are able to fit it in.

I highly doubt that as the headliner of a successful network show, Benoist would be cast in the supporting role of Cynthia Weil. I think she’d be miscast as Weil. She’s perfect for Carole King, though, I would revisit the show just to see her in it. I loved it with Jesse Mueller.

For the record, the initial tweet seems to have been deleted & edited in a new tweet. So either they got their facts wrong in the first tweet, or they let the cat out of the bag too early & had to re-word (in which case, too late).

That's a really weird way to reword it. "...cast in the Broadway play." It still reveals where she's going while being really vague about it.

This appears to have been a convenient way to trash all the negative comments appended to the original tweet.

The issue with Melissa is that she also canceled the UK con she has signed on last year. so that's 2 for 2 cancellations in the UK so those who are upset are mostly those who went through the same thing last year.

 

I agree that she'll most likely play Carole. she's 'too famous' to not play the lead. she will bring helluvalot people to the theater.

 

Seemed like they let the cat out of the bag and had to delete the original tweet because of that.

I'm sure you understand that people have achieved some level of fame without everyone on Earth knowing who they are. I know if I said Idina Menzel to people I would get a blank stare as a response.

Benoist's background is in musical theatre; it's what she went to school for. There's even videos of her in her college production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
