If I'm not mistaken, KA in Las Vegas, at approximately 200 million, is considered to be the most expensive production of all times.

KA in Las vegas actually LOOKS like it cost $200 million.

Assuming Spider-Man looks like a $30 million show, where did the other $35 million go? Mismanagement? Hubris? Ego?

Well, people have been paid for several years on the pre-production work. And there's been a lot of it.
Who knows what the license cost?
Who knows how much Bono/The Edge cost?
How much the technical development cost?
And they've been renting the theatre for a year (or so).
Not every dollar is "seen" on stage. Whether they got their money's worth is a different question.

I remember seeing Frankenstein. I still have the color Playbill from it. After seing Waiting For Godot, I saw Glover at a Q & A afterwards. I mentioned Frankenstein to him & he smileed and said "oh you were one of them".

I still have a Poster and some flyers for Lord of the Rings musical in London which says its "The most expensive musical undertaking of all time." I was told by some coworkers it was 30+ million dollars. Shrek's initial investment was only 25 million. So you could say that Shrek was the most expensive on Broadway, since LOTR never came to New York. And we're only talking about musicals here, not 'Cirque' shows which can go much, much higher.

I can see "KA" costing that much. I saw it last year and was blown away just walking into the theater. It is a massive show. They even have speakers built into the seats.

Well if you are including Cirque shows like KA, I'd say the most expensive is The House of Dancing Water in Macau, at about $250 million. And every penny is on display.

KA is an amazing show. And, when you consider that mounting a show in Las Vegas is substantially cheaper than New York, KA's $200 million buys a lot. Of course, they did do extensive work on the theater space itself. There was a fair amount of excavating necessary to accommodate the various hydraulic stages and that costs mega bucks. Still, watching KA is truly awe inspiring. Robert Lepage - like Julie Taymor - is a visionary. He really is an amazing director.

On the cheaper end of things, the original production of Odets' "Waiting For Lefty" cost $8...

Thanks for the link to, The House of Dancing Water. It looks really wonderful. Not sure if it tops KA though. Although there was extensive remodeling done to accommodate KA, basically, they did have a large theater and it's infrastructure to start with. It seems that they include the cost of building the theater into The House of the Dancing Water. Either way, they're both huge spectacles currently playing the planet. Woohoo for spectacle!

If I'm not mistaken, TABOO is up there as well. I remember reading Rosie O'Donnell invested at least $10 Million into the project.

Also,
Jekyll & Hyde and Young Frankenstein

Jekyll and Hyde was expensive?
Judging from the DVD they had a basic set with pieces flown on/off, a small orchestra and very little special effects...so I thought it would be around $10 million or so...but i could be wrong

PBS has been running the Cirque "Flowers in the Desert" special and "KA" is featured along with 4 of their other shows in Vegas. They show the "Battle Wall", the shipwreck and the "slave cage".
