Spring Awakening is definitely the most overrated show this year, but I wouldn't say EVER.
I'm going with Phantom of the Opera.
Wicked, Spamalot or Spring Awakening in recent years.
Cats, Phantom, Les Miz and Mamma mia before that.

"wait wait wait wait, I vaguely recall everyone (basically everyone) on the site being in love with SA and now that it won a bunch of tonys (granted some undeserved, but still) we hate it?"
Yes pants2, unfortunately that's how it works here.
As soon as a play becomes well known and popular amongst normal everyday people...the true "theater" people, hate it.
it's a sad fact of life.
As for most over rated show...I'm going to go with Mamma Mia.
I honsetly hate that sterotype, ActualReality. Is is possible that people just don't like it. Not because it's popular.
I've actually warmed up to Spring Awakening since it first came out. It's not my favourite show but it certainly has some positives.
Phantom of the Opera and Wicked top my list.
Sorry wonderful...
Yes, it is entirely possible that people simply don't like Spring Awakening, and I'm not saying it's impossible to dislike the show.
BUT...It is also completely realistic to say that people who used to be fans now claim that the play was "ruined" for them because of the "annoying fans" or "popularity" of the show. And THAT bothers me.

I saw Spring Awakening to see what all the fuss was about... And left still wondering what all the fuss was about. I wanted to like it, but it just ain't gonna happen.
Have to agree with "The Producers" and will throw "Spamalot" into the mix.
The Producers
Cats
Mamma Mia!
And that exclamation point serves a purpose here.
Since the Tonys, I may have to add "Spring Awakening" to my list.

Phantom of the Opera by FAR.
I'd have to say Contact. I mean what the fckjcj was that?
A musical with no singing? And it had Karen Ziemba and Boyd Gaines? It was just an artsty fartsy dance concert.

I would definitely agree with Light in the Piazza and Les Miz.
The Producers for me. It was certainly not all it was cracked up to be.
Light in the Piazza is on some peoples list? That's kind of surprising to me... Could someone explain why? It wasnt like it was crap on a stage that ran for years... (I am not criticizing your choice... just wondering why.)
Personally Chicago, not the most, but still..
And Wicked most definitely, I was so disappointed when I saw it.
I'd have to say The Producers, Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys. I have a grudge against Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia for being jukebox musicals anyway, but The Producers was really tired from the very beginning. The original movie was just so funny and to take it and water down the humor while hamming up the ham just didn't work for me.

Spring Awakening is not the most overrated show of all time. That's ridiculous.
I'd say Cats.
I definetly agree with The Lion King, as well as The Producers.
The Phantom of the Opera
Cats
Sunset Boulevard
Pretty much the Andrew Lloyd Webber oeuvre except Evita.
