Musical or Play for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman

Just watched the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer. I’m curious if there are any plays or musicals that come to mind that would be ideal for them. They have such great chemistry

It would probably have to be something original that specifically tailors to their chemistry. I don’t think shoehorning them into something that already exists is really going to work.

I can't think of an existing musical with male co-lead characters that really fits either of them.

For plays, though, I think they'd be great in a McDonagh play. I could see them in The Pillowman, for instance.

Here me out...Stine and Stone in City of Angels. I don't know if Reynolds has the stamina or vocal skill to actually do eight shows a week, but theoretically, this would be a show that plays to both of their strengths. In my wildest dreams, it might even be a case where they could True West/Little Fox it and swap roles every night.

What about CITY OF ANGELS? (Reynolds as Stine, Jackman as Stone) edit: HA! the poster above had the exact same idea!

They'd probably benefit most from a new project that can be tailored to their specific talents, and it probably should be a film or a TV special. The economics of Broadway probably don't work to have both of them in the same show. Each could sell out a year on their name alone, and their compensation packages would be enormous. Even under unique circumstances (such as them being the principal investors), there's still a capitalization and running costs and nobody works cheap when you have stars on that level.

Forgot about City of Angels entirely- that does seem like a good fit for them. But considering the show seems cost prohibitive as it is, it seems unlikely it'd ever be a vehicle for two Hollywood A-listers.

That's actually a really good idea. Maybe a film adaptation?

Hugh & Ryan have tremendous chemistry which will likely translate very well on stage. Hugh has the range for any genre while Ryan can handle comedy, action & maybe drama as well.

Hugh has committed to a long run in the past (TheMusicMan) but I am not sure that Ryan would want to do that, given his film commitments & business ventures.

Maybe the most practical thing is for them is to do a new or a remake of a musical comedy movie. Maybe something like Singin' In The Rain ( Hugh in the Kelly role & Ryan in the O'Connor role...with someone like Anne Hathaway as the ingenue). Just an example of what could suit them.

IIRC, Hugh was offered the film adaptation of City of Angels by the late Larry Gelbart, but he wasn't interested at that time. It was my impression that he would play both Stone & Stine.

Or maybe a brand new musical comedy for them.

Maybe directed by Shawn Levy (who is directing Deadpool & Wolverine -- he says he used to be a musical theatre nerd in the past. He directed HJ in Real Steel & RR in a few comedies. He is also a producer of the stage adaptation of Stranger Things now playing in London ( he directed some episodes of the TV show) and was recently nominated by the DGA for his directorial work in All The Things That We Cannot See.

All three are great friends.

Ryan attended Opening Night of The Music Man with Shawn Levy & wife Blake Lively. He left his good friend Hugh ( they have a longtime ongoing feud bromance) a gift in his dressing room. He superimposed his head image on a famous Gene Kelly pose ( presumably from Singin' In the Rain).

I love the idea of Jackman and Reynolds costarring in a new theatre project designed to play to their strengths and great chemistry together, although I do wonder whether Reynolds has the necessary stage chops. Has he ever stepped onto the legitimate stage? But with his good friend Jackman—a stage animal from way back—as mentor, the odds of success might be pretty good.

I have seen Ryan in some dramatic roles and he absolutely handled them, but I agree that he would hate to be parted from his beloved Wrexham for any extended period of time. Maybe a West End run would work better for that reason.
