They both think Clybourne Park will win? Darn. Hasn't it won enough for not exactly being ground-breaking!

I was also surprised they both thought Kazee would win. This has felt like Danny Burstein's "year" for quite awhile. He's quickly becoming the male Jan Maxwell (does he also carry a bag full of other peoples' Tonys?).

I also think it's odd Isherwood thought Sons of the Prophet and 4,000 Miles deserved Tony nominations.

I always forget that Brantley and I both loved Lysistrata Jones.

I agree with several of their predictions, but I really do hope Christian Borle wins for his hysterical performance in Peter and the Starcatcher, and that Jan Maxwell wins for Follies.

Wow... I've always said, and I continue to say that Jeremy Jordan WILL win for NEWSIES. Like others, I'm surprised they both predict Cerveris to win. I think it's doubtful. I also agree with other here that Christian Borle has a good chance to take the award from Andrew Garfield, and despite how good (as always) Jayne Houdyshell was, she won't take it away from Judy Kaye or another nominee.
And again, I agree with other here that Judith Light's winning moment may arrive this year.

I think PORGY & BESS has a much stronger chance of winning Best Musical Revival over FOLLIES. Finally, ONCE will win Best Musical, not NEWSIES.

I think a few of these races are probably going to be down to the wire right up until the winners are announced. Particularly lead actor/musical and best musical. I agree that Burnstein has excellent buzz and gave a very deserving, emotional performance in Follies. At the same time, Jordan has pretty much been this year's golden boy; a lot is said about his charisma in Newsies but you also get the sense of a boy who had to grow up too fast and has the weight of the world on his shoulders at 17. And then there's Kazee who could sweep in on a wave of love for Once. As far as best musical goes, I think it will be a very close call; I'd like Newsies to win just for personal preference, but Once may win since it is more "artistic" for lack of a better word. Either way, it's kinda cool that the winner will be a show that was never even intended for Broadway and has made a real name for itself!

Isn't it weird to release this list so soon? Is voting through? Don't you think it might influence some people if they haven't already voted?

I think they are dead wrong about "Newsies" taking Best Musical. I haven't seen "Once" yet, but industry folks (voters) are loving it. I also think Berstein and Borle are the front runners, and Maxwell could be the upset of the evening.

Don't you think that's the intent?

Newsies is going to win Best Musical. The smaller, "artsy" show hasn't beaten the tourist draw since Spring Awakening won over Mary Poppins.

I saw Salesman early in the run, but I don't recall thinking Emond and Garfield were particularly Tony-worthy. And I had no idea Michael Cerveris has such a big chance of winning.

I agree with some of these, especially the fact that Once SHOULD win

...that isn't a compelling reason why Newsies is going to win (besides, wasn't that race between Spring Awakening and Grey Gardens, anyway?) In fact, that may even be a strike in Once's favor.

Both shows have critical praise and audience appeal. It's really a toss-up, I think. Once has already promised a tour. That undoubtedly will help it. Those that love it, really love it. Newsies delivers crowds and is appealing for families and will undoubtedly tour well. However, it is, as of now, a limited run... and until we hear otherwise, it's going to close before the end of the year. They may become open-ended if they win the Tony, but voters may not be moved that by possibility.

'I also think it's odd Isherwood thought Sons of the Prophet and 4,000 Miles deserved Tony nominations.'

I'm unclear why. The preface to the picks clearly stated that the two critics could consider shows not on Broadway for their 'should have been' categories. And SONS OF THE PROPHET was the best play I've seen in a verrrrry long time.

Isn't After Eight just darling? Spewing venom and Cunt-itude everywhere while never adding anything of worth to anything in this world. Ever.

Methinks After Eight's Ghost of Christmas Future would show a bleak ending.

I mean, I hope ONCE wins. It's doing well at the box office, it's artsy and daring, and it got the best reviews of any musical this season.

If ONCE doesn't win best musical, I really don't see the tour ever materializing. Even if it does win I think the tour is still a long shot. I doubt it could fill any of the big venues on the touring circuit, or any of the mid-sized ones at that. In my opinion, that was just an Avenue Q move to try to sway regional voters. I don't think it will work twice. Frankly, I do not see NICE WORK's tour ever happening either, and I feel their announcement has a similar hidden agenda.

If the awards were based solely on reviews, than Lysistrata would have a better case than both NICE WORK and LEAP (which really has no case at all).

NEWSIES is performing extremely well at the box office, is a much more daring move for Disney, and got almost positive reviews across the board, with only a few exceptions.

The race this year is really close, closer than it has been in years.

Newsies is going to win Best Musical. The smaller, "artsy" show hasn't beaten the tourist draw since Spring Awakening won over Mary Poppins.

That hasn't happened way before that. The "artsy" show to beat that year was Grey Gardens, and the more popular Spring Awakening was always the favorite to win. Mary Poppins actually took the spot everyone thought Legally Blonde had.

The Spring Awakening vs. Mary Poppins must have been in your head only - Mary Poppins was never competition to any of the other nominated shows.
