Re: Noah Schnapp to make debut in new play AFFLUENZA

Rich guy (not the SNL one), hoping for writing / directing attention, casts any C-rate actor in Hammersmith, West London (not "the west end) small venue production.

Is there something about this actor that justifies the hostility I'm sensing in this thread? I'm genuinely curious: I know he was in Stranger Things (which I haven't watched) and that he came out as gay a few years ago, but that's all I know about him.

From what I understand, he got enmeshed in controversy when a video of him laughing/holding a sticker that read "Zionism is sexy" was published online just a few weeks after October 7th. People online found it pretty tasteless, especially as tensions were very high (not that they've lessened, just that it was the news story at the time). I believe he did a follow-up video a few months later trying to clarify, but it didn't help much.

Plus, the prevailing opinion (one I happen to agree with) seems to be that as he's grown older, he's gotten worse as an actor. Not that uncommon with child stars.

Re: Noah Schnapp to make debut in new play AFFLUENZA

He was actually not holding a sticker. He was laughing and filming friends who were flashing the stickers. He got backlash and it happened at the time the final season of "Stranger Things" was going into production. People were calling for a boycott of the show over it. I saw some comments wanting him to be removed from the final season, which we know would have not happened. He is too central to the show.

They seemed to have "squashed" it relatively fast but it is one of those things that will probably come up on social media whenever he is in entertainment news. At least for a while. JMO

Thanks to all of you for explaining this to me. The controversy makes sense, at least. But it would probably be best to see how he does in the show before passing judgment.

Just fyi this tactic doesn't work anymore and trivializes actual antisemitic opinions and behavior. You are part of the problem. Nothing about Zionism is sexy, it's pure evil.

You're not the one who decides that, buddy.

And regardless of one's perspective on Israel and the actions of its current government, saying that acknowledging its existence is "pure evil" is at the very least textbook xenophobia.

1. You’re right I don’t decide anything but my opinion is popular and growing (as seen in public opinion polling over the last several years). More people every day see through the false dichotomy that Judaism and Zionism are one and the same. They are not. Being anti-Zionist does not equate to being antisemitic. That is a fact.

2. It isn’t xenophobia. Zionism is a political ideology that expands far beyond Israel. It’s an ideology popular all over the west. Would you be shocked to learn that most Zionists in American are Christian? Most Zionist politicians in Congress are Christian. This is a fact. You should educate yourself on Christian Zionism. I most strongly oppose Zionism in America and hate to see my tax dollars fund a genocide. It makes me sick to even think about. I will not back down from my belief that Zionism is rooted deeply in colonialism and the project has led to a horrific genocide and generational suffering.

Hope this helps and you can sound a little less ignorant moving forward. Do not even try to engage with me if you don’t know the definition of xenophobia.

Re: Noah Schnapp to make debut in new play AFFLUENZA

Zionism is the belief that Jews have a right to an existence in their ancestral homeland. Zionism is older than the current state of Israel. Being a Zionist doesn't mean you support the current Israeli government or its actions. Many Zionists want a two-state solution. Many Zionists, including some who were slaughtered on October 7th, actually worked and volunteered with Gazans on peace efforts, like Vivian Silver, and Bilha & Yachovi Inon, may their memories be a blessing.

Therefore, Zionism isn't pure evil. However, I'd say calling all Zionists "pure evil", even those like Vivian, Bilha and Yachovi, is actually pretty evil.

Yup, there is ongoing hate against him with a lot of distorted facts. For example, this video with the stickers was filmed the summer before October 7, and it leaked in the weeks afterwards. The perception is that he's evil and wants children massacred. However, he did apologize, clarify that he is against genocide, he's learned more about the history in question, donated to hunger aid, and shared content by Muslim activists and people living in Gaza. I can also say none of those latter actions was performative, it's been pretty covert steps that fans (like myself) have noticed over the years.

As for the criticisms of his acting, he's the only cast member to get multiple awards and nominations for his performance in the final season. Go figure...

This, thank you. My stepmom was raised with Zionist beliefs. My best friend was born and raised in Israel, same thing. And guess what, they are both appalled by the actions of Netanyahu and take continued action to help.

Multiple awards and nominations is stretching it a bit, isn't it? I see one win from something called the Critics Choice LGBTQ+ Awards, and one Saturn Award nomination (in a category where Sadie Sink was also nominated).

Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

We can also count the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Drama which, obviously, is a testament to Noah and his character.

You don’t actually know what Zionism is, do you?

It’s the belief that indigenous people have the right to live in their ancestral land. That’s literally it.

Why do you think indigenous nomadic Arab tribes are so often ferociously Zionist? (Hint: the genocide that’s killed ten times more of the population than in Gaza, that no one has ever heard of which receives no media attention).

Zionism is simply the belief that Jews have a right to live in their ancestral homeland. The overwhelming majority of Jews around the world are anti-Zionist, including non-secular Jews. Please explain to me how a non-secular person can be a religious extremist. Oh, right, they can't.

Additionally, some of the most extreme, ultra-Orthodox Jews, identify as non-Zionist.

You should probably not speak about things you don't understand. Because you're making a fool out of yourself when you do.

Once again, WHERE are the moderators? Y'all delete posts that hurt actor's feelings about their poor attendance, but you let anti-semitism run wild on here.

Re: Noah Schnapp to make West End debut in new play AFFLUENZA

It's really SH*Tty that Noah's acting and choice of role (and the entire production) has been completely overshadowed by the fact Noah happens to be from a ethnic minority group that the world has decided is fair game for abuse even though it's one of the tiniest and historically most oppressed minority groups in the world.

That would never, ever happen with any other minority group.
