When I saw these nominations, my jaw literally dropped to the floor.
These are outrageous! All of these nominations for Young Frankenstein, and only one for Passing Strange! Really, I'm glad that this is in no way a look at what the Tony nominations will look like.
>These people nominate and vote for shows they think will play well in their out of town markets.<
For the most part, the Outer Critics Circle consists of writers for small papers in the New York and New Jersey metro area, but not in NYC itself, hence the name "Outer". However, they have nothing invested in tours as say, the road voters for the Tony Awards do.
im surprised that no one mentioned this, but I'm pretty mad about not nomination for Anika Noni Rose for CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF.
if James Earl Jones could get a nomination for it (who was certainly my least favorite part of the show), i would think that they would at least give Anika a nomination. she was the best reviewed person in the production, after all, and for me was definitely the best part of CAT by far.
shame.
I think Karen and Sandy should be nominated for Best Straight-Face for getting through this embarrassment without laughing, guffawing or scratching their heads.
All we need to know about this organization's credibility can be confirmed by visiting their website- Notice that "Circle" is spelt, "Cirlce" on the top of the page.
I also browsed their members..among them...
-someone from "Trek or Treat"
-a "New York Resident"
- a "Suburbanite"
- 2 writers from Blowout Magazine
- a "celebrity consultant"

I thought Passing Strange was off-Broadway last season, but I guess not. So shocked about YF, really shocked about GYPSY, SITPWG, and IN THE HEIGHTS. Also, kinda shocked about sets and lighting for MERMAID...

I also brace myself for the curveballs thrown by the OCC, but this year it is ridiculous! They have used 5 nominations for acting categories in the past, why not this year? The lack of nominations for Kerry Butler, Jenna Russell, Daniel Breaker, Andrea Martin, Jackie Hoffman/Mary Testa, Tom Wopat, Marc Kudisch, and Leslie Kritzer as well as the misplacement of Boyd Gaines and the nominations of Shuler Hensley, Tony Yazbeck, and Harriet Harris are just mind-boggling. It also bothers me (though this is just a general note for every year) how they refuse to nominate for Best Book of a Musical.
It's ridiculous that Jenna Russel was snubbed. I thought her performance was terrific, and definitely deserved a nomination.
A small consolation -- as pointed out by Wayman Wong on ATC, last year, Mary Poppins got the most nominations with 11 and Spring Awakening got only 3 (but won all 3 while Mary Poppins won nothing). (Grey Gardens was ineligible last year.)
Very good point.
Also, Daniel Jenkins (MARY POPPINS) was nominated for Featured Actor in a Musical last season, and John Gallagher Jr. (who went on to win the Tony) was left off the list.
This organization is a joke.
adamgreer, thanks for pointing out the lack of credibility of this organization in your above post.
I think that should give all of us some comfort.
Cry-Baby.....really?
Yes for Young Frankenstein! I hope Mel sweeps the awards again, he deserves it! What a great show, I laughed throughout the whole thing, and I love the music!
Don't put too much stock in these noms/awards. This was the organization that gave Annie Warbucks the award for Best Musical in 1994. If you don't believe me here's a link.

ANNIE WARBUCKS was an excellent show.
Did you see the original Off-Broadway production?
Have you heard the score?
Or are you just basing it off the fact that it's a sequel to ANNIE, therefore it must be bad?
I never saw the off-Broadway production, but I'm familar with the score. I think A Younger Man and But You Go One are good songs. In fact, I find the score enjoyable, but not best musical material. The plot is definitely ridiculous.
Annie Warbucks won Best OFF-Broadway musical in 1994. Their Best Broadway Musical in 1994 was Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Sort of reminds me of that time Pia Zadora's husband brought her that Golden Globe for that crap-fest movie 'Butterfly" she was in (then again was Pia Zadora in anything that wasn't crap?). At least Mel Brooks does learn from people who where ultimately sucessful.
>was Pia Zadora in anything that wasn't crap?<
Sure. Henry, Sweet Henry, Fiddler on the Roof and Crazy for You on Broadway.
I think it's funny how people are laughing at the "unprofessional members" of the OCC.
Face it: so called 'regular people' love YF. Go see the show sometime (and pay attention to the audience's response!), then you'd know.
"To me, these nominees are fine, but those that we see that are left out are probably the one's we are going to be seeing come Tony nomination time.
It's kind of like the GOLDEN GLOBES and the OSCARS...IMHO!"
That was my question. I'm not familiar with the OCC's. Is this awards show indicative of what will get Tony nominations?
