Posted: 3/8/12 at 10:24amToo soon to call. Newsies has a lot of good buzz.

Nope. It's both a bore and a chore.
I'm seeing it Saturday.

I find it hard to work up much interest in the question, in a season where the nominees for Best New Musical are
Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark
Bonnie and Clyde
Lysistrata Jones
Once (not eligible for score)
Newsies (is enough of the score new?)
Ghost The Musical
Nice Work If You Can Get It (not eligible for score)
Leap of Faith
I didn't think Once was a terrible show, but I did think it was pretty hokey, sentimental stuff. And the fact that the songs are only vaguely and tenuously connected to the book turns me off.

Too early to call, but I don't think it will win.
I figure it will get polite reviews but not raves.
Newsies could go with the "adorable ragamuffins" angle and exploit the comparisons to Annie.
Nice Work doesn't really excite me, but it could be another Crazy for You or even My One and Only.
The only prediction I will make is that TOTD won't be nominated for best musical.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 12:43pmI was just thinking about this the other day and something was telling me that it is going to take the Tony. I saw the movie and while I thought it was good, I didn't need to see it again and I really have no real desire to pay to see it onstage. I did attend a benefit where the cast sang "Falling Slowly" and I have to say they sounded fantastic.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 1:19pmsingtopher, a number of the songs are shuffled around. Almost all of them have new arrangements. Girl's family of Czech immigrants play a bigger role onstage. A few songs have been added in to flesh out the show. The story was rewritten to take place in a pub. The conflict seems a bit more externalized and heightened for the stage show. They're not monumental changes, but they effectively rework a very quiet indie film into a stage musical.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 1:39pmThanks trent. I was wondering if the whole thing takes place in a bar/pub based on the few clips I have seen.

This is a boring show to me. But it might turn out to be a hit just like Spring AWAKENING

Posted: 3/8/12 at 2:19pmHmmm... Thanks, Trent. Didn't care for the film, so I really don't have a desire to catch this. Oh, well. Best of luck to all of them.

You don't have to see the film first. The show is it's own entity. Many people have seen only the show.
As for the pub setting, It is not something that is ever really acknowledged in the show itself, it is just sort of a presence that is always there, giving it a more intimate feeling of people hanging out, making music together, and telling this story.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 3:15pmI'm DYING to see this show, and hope it stays around long enough for me to get to the city! Some of the songs are just simply, achingly beautiful. I've been listening to the NPR stream a lot. (Also, gorgeously simple and cute logo!)

I really loved this show, and I haven't enjoyed much this season. I thought the cast was brilliant, and the John Doyle "the actors are also the orchestra concept" worked for me here the first time. I would say to see the show early in the run, I don't see how they can recast this!
That said, it's probably too small and original a show to be a "slam dunk". But it will be a hit, and very likely win best musical.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 4:22pmHow is it original? Isn't it another movie-turned-into-a-musical?

Posted: 3/8/12 at 4:47pmIt was charming and the pub party at the start is fun for the audience. Talented performers every where as singers dancers and musicians. Did not like the scolling reverse subtitles- distracting& doesn't make sense. May be a bit too off the beaten track for a Tony- remember they also want a $$$ maker that can tour. But I did enjoy it.

It's impossible to tell how the Tony voters will go from season to season. Generally, they like to pick the crowd-pleasers and high-energy spectacles, but if Once receives strong reviews and solid ticket sales, it probably has a very good shot at Best Musical. Newsies sounds like it will fare better for Disney than Little Mermaid or Tarzan, but it's unlikely to have the audiences of Beauty and the Beast, Lion King or Mary Poppins. The reviews will probably be kind, but not raves. Nice Work is anyone's guess. The potential for a smash hit is there, but I find Marshall's work to be so hit-or-miss there's no way of knowing if this show will be fun and creative or merely pleasant and serviceable. I'm really not expecting much from Leap of Faith other than a scenery-chewing star vehicle for Esparza. Ghost will be praised for visual spectacle but the book and score will probably be only garner tepid reviews. Spider-Man will probably receive several nominations to fill out categories, but there's no reason to think it would win anything other than possibly design awards.

Posted: 3/9/12 at 11:20amI didn't see the film and loved the show. I feel it's unique from many other film to stage adaptations in that this feels like it was always created with the stage in mind. It never feels like it's trying to ape a film, recreating set pieces or moments.

Oh, this is VERY true. Someday, I'll be a powers that be and you'll ALL be sorry.

Posted: 3/9/12 at 4:55pmI think it's between Once and Newsies for Best Musical but TBH for Disney, even getting nominated would be good, think Newsies will win best choreography.
