Well, considering her take on Spider-Man, this really isn't surprising. She needs to direct, not write.

well, that ending would have guaranteed RAGTIME the Tony.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The sad part, really, is that I can kind of see the message she was trying to send, about man encroaching on nature and how we've harmed the planet. This doesn't come completely out of nowhere, it's an idea that clearly had a thought process leading to it and a purpose behind it. But it's a moral that has nothing to do with the show, and has utterly no relevance to the plot.
On a less strange note, according to James B. Stewart's DisneyWar, she reportedly also wanted to explore Simba's lost years with Timon and Pumbaa in the show, which Disney Theatrical was likewise uninterested in pursuing, although part of me laughed later when The Lion King 1½ came out with basically the same plot idea at its center.

Further proof that the only reason Lion King is any good was because she had Disney to tell her "no." Maybe if she had that with Spider-Man things would have turned out differently.

Kind of reminds me of Michael Cimino
After The Deer Hunter, the suits at United Artists gave him a blank check. The result was Heaven's Gate and the destruction of the UA studio. The success of The Lion King resulted in a blank check given to her with Spiderman being the result. There was no was it could succeed.

I don't see it quite so simplistically. She was hired to do Spiderman--it wasn't something she initiated. I think a lot of the fault goes to the producers who hired her.

Yes The Producers gave her a blank check. They only stopped her when it was obvious she lost control. By that time, she burned thru millions and millions of dollars. By that time, failure was a forgone conclusion.

I would say they stopped her way too late. Would an average budgeted 10-15 million dollar production of Spider-Man been so awful? Would it have been worse than what we ended up with? I still think there's a fun show in there somewhere but all Julie did was hide it.

I think it comes down to the fact that she's a beautiful visionary, but she's not a storyteller. Her Beatle's movie looked awesome and had some great moments, but the story sucked. Spider-Man looked awesome, but the story (and the music) sucked. I really like what she does, but damn, she should not be allowed to write it too.

Or, as I put it, it reminded people that the film of Hair did not capture the magic of the original. (Seriously. Every time I saw Across the Universe, I kept having flashbacks to the Hair movie, especially in the scene at dinner with Maxwell, Strawberry, and their parents. I half-expected him to jump on the table and start belting out "I Got Life".)

Well mystery solved. Was never sure if she was as good as she thinks or a complete lunatic. Now seeing left on her own the lion king would have been the same mess spiderman turned into...I think she should return the TONY...best directors shouldn't need to be handled by producers to not ruin a show.
