With the nominations for these coming out tomorrow--do these awards usually have any correlation with the Tonys or other theatre awards?

Not really. They usually have a number of nominees that are do not show up on the ballots for the Tonys or for other awards.

Not really true; they usually correlate to the Tonys but they also nominate Off-Broadway work so some shows are ineligible that have already had life Off-Broadway prior to their Broadway engagement.

But usually, the major winners line up with the Tony Award winners (Best Musical and Best Play mainly) unless something is Off-Broadway that is eligible for the OCC (or Drama Desk) that is clearly the best of all the nominees but isn't eligible for the Tony because it's, well, Off-Broadway.

Just a random observation .. do the Outer Critics Circle Award people tend to award people whose respective shows have been out of town for a while?

Marla Schaffel back in 2001 won the Outer Critics Award (and Drama Desk) I believe over Christine Ebersole, who took the Tony for 42nd Street? (Schaffel did Jane Eyre from 96-2001!)

I know Robert Cuciolli won the OCC Award too for Jekyll & HYDE - but lost the Tony as well. (Jekyll & HYDE took 7 years / 3 with Cuciolli to Broadway)

edit - put in the shows! Updated On: 4/19/09 at 11:13 PM

Not sure about that, but in terms of the winners for their performance categories, they seem to be off the mark from the Tonys (at least in the recent past) such as Kevin Kline, James Earl Jones, Laurie Metcalf who all won last year and the first two weren't even nominated for Tonys.

So I kinda just contradicted myself but my point is that the major PRODUCTION categories (Play, Revivals, Musical) tend to fall in line with the Tonys. Updated On: 4/19/09 at 11:17 PM

Ugh, I forgot Kevin Kline wasn't nominated for a Tony. TRAVESTY! He would have beaten out Rylance.

Didn't Young Frakenstein and Xanadu tie for Best Musical last year at the Outer Critics Circle Awards? That doesn't seem to correlate...

EDITED: IN THE HEIGHTS was ineligible as it nominated in the previous year for its Off-Broadway production.

No, Passing Strange was Off-Broadway the same season as it was on Broadway.

It was nominated for Best Score last year.

Yeah, I just realized that and edited it. But still, the winner of the Tony for Best Musical was ineligible for the OCC so the winners couldn't possibly correlate.

The same thing happened with Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens the year before. did Outer Critics give it to Audra for 110?

The Outer Critics Circle actually has a separate award for Best Off-Broadway Musical and Best Off-Broadway Play.

Edit: I confused Drama Desks with Outer Critics.

No. Donna and Audra tied at the Drama Desks. Debra Monk won Featured at the Drama Desks.

Only Donna was the Outer Critics for Leading. Karen Ziemba won Featured at the Outer Critics.

So where are the nominations? 11:00 was 30 minutes ago, and in 2009 that's a long time.

And no Our Town for revival of a play, but Blithe Spirit? And Moises Kaufman for director over David Cromer?
