Which musicals do you believe have been over hyped? Too many unwarranted awards, or too many overly gushing fans, or too many marketing ploys to keep the show running? Well the list can be extremely long and temperatures could get extremely hot. I'll get things rolling...
1. THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE 2. RENT 3. Any show from the tinkling keyboards of ALW 4. HAIRSPRAY 5. LES MIZ
Yours for a better Broadway!

"The Producers" is one of the most over-hyped musicals in Broadway history. It's a funny show with a mediocre score, just about as funny as the movie it was based on. It's more than okay but considerably less than great. And it wins more Tonys than any show in history??? Ridiculous. Just for starters, the fact that Cady Huffman beat out dear departed Kathleen ("The Full Monty") Freeman was a travesty.
Was told last summer that its tickets were going to be as HOT as Hairspray's, so I bought both. Sat in an empty theatre for Dance holding full price tickets.
I have a smart aleck answer. So take it with a grain of salt. I think everything is over-hyped until I see it myself. I just saw Frog and Toad, and The Play What I wrote. Loved them both, but for different reasons. Both are now gone. If I listen to the hype my expectations grow and then can be let down easily. I was not happy with Lion King. After waiting upteem years to finally get tickets it was performing disappointment. Not a technical disappointment.
Can we please stop!!! I think that it is kind of rude to go attacking musicals just for the sake of convorsation! A lot of the shows mentioned may be the favorites of other people, and I think that just for the sake of courtesy, maybe we should try to keep our comments on posts like this a little more civilized. I think that the following post is just a little rude, see what you think:
"Over-hyped....
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
Without a doubt, the most over-hyped and over-rated POS
currently running.

You know, even though I answered the post. I am thinking twice at this point. I think you are correct. We shouldn't attack or complain. I don't see any of us on the line for 8 performances a week, or investing our money in a show. (Even though that is one thing I would love to be able to do) I would like to take back what I said about the Lion King. maybe people were having an off day. Everyone else in the audiednce seemed to enjoy the show. I am so sorry.
I agree. Aida is not really a "Disney" musical even though it is ran by Disney. Lion King is a amazing show when it comes to the production, but people give the show too much credit. There are so many better shows on Broadway. And Beauty and the Beast, well they should move that to Disneyworld. I have never seen it (and hey, maybe I might like it) but I feel and have heard it is not the best. Natasha Katz lights it so that must be good. Tell me what you think! :)
Definately The Producers. I found 42nd Street funnier, and that is not hyped at all. The Producers was just not all that funny for me, and I don't think it deserved half of its Tonys.
Aren't all shows over hyped? It's just advertising. Name a show that gets a run on Broadway, National Tour or foreign production that isn't a "Smash Hit" ?
I agree with alterego, it isn't the shows fault whether or not it is over-hyped or not, it's just advertising! And it might just be possible that there is a motive behind all of the fans making a big deal over a show, could it be that the show might actually be good, and worthy of all it's publicity! There are certain shows such as The Phantom Of The Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, and Miss Saigon, that have earned their place in history, and deserve in every way to be called mega musicals!!!!

I wholeheartedly agree about THE PRODUCERS. It's not a bad show, but it's not the Second coming of Christ, either. For the most part, I thought it was 2 1/2 hours of legalized screaming--and I saw the original cast!
I think that with The Producers the reason it was so universally praised was that people were relieved to see a book show again, that it was a return to 'musical comedy' a form that for about 15 years had been deemed as old fashioned. After Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom, Saigon, Jekyl and Hyde and so forth it came across as a breath of fresh air. All hail MUSICAL COMEDY!!!
