PIRATES! cast recording

What is the chance that there will be a cast recording of PIRATES! The Penzance Musical

?

PIRATES! cast recording

I’d say pretty likely? New orchestrations, a fantastic cast & creative team, and a brand new adaptation of a show that hasn’t been revived on Broadway in over forty years.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

99% likely considering it is Rupert Holmes, new orchestras and the cast involved

PIRATES! cast recording

Highly unlikely. Limited run without deep pocket producers. Even a basic cast album costs $250,000. They just don't have the money.

Yes with Rupert involved and the potential for licensing (as a way to get the show known in other regions so theatres and schools will want to do the show themselves), they’ll work out a way to get a recording I should think.

You can always count on me 🎶

Almost all of Roundabout's Broadway musical revivals receive cast albums- a glance at their production history, the only exceptions in the last twenty years seem to have been Threepenny Opera, The Apple Tree, and 1776 (I'm not counting the re-revival of Cabaret, as it was already recorded the first time around).

Agreed it is likely. I think “Limited run without deep pocket producers” is a bit of an unfair generalization to make about arguably the most powerful non-profit institution on Broadway, one who engages in commercial enhancements and partnerships behind closed doors on a very regular basis. If leadership wants it to happen they will absolutely find a way to swing it.

Is the absence of a recording for Roundabout's Threepenny probably due to licensing issues with Cyndi Lauper's recording contract, similar to the issues with Joan Jett in Rocky Horror a few years earlier?

I don't know that we've ever gotten a definitive answer to this but that seems fairly likely to me, at least.

Forgive me if I'm remembering incorrectly but isn't there an unreleased recording of The Apple Tree revival?

If anyone's wondering just how worthless Google AI is, I just searched in hopes of finding out when a PPM cast recording would be released (please, god!). Look what it told me. And guess what I found. Zip, zero, nada, of course. Then I came here to see if there was message board discussion of it...

From Google AI:

Yes, there is a cast recording for "Pirates! A Penzance Musical." It features the current Broadway cast, including David Hyde Pierce, Ramin Karimloo, Jinkx Monsoon, Nicholas Barasch,Samantha Williams, and Preston Truman Boyd. You can find it on major streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.

p.s. FWIW in terms of the search engine here, the very first thing I entered into the BWW message board search box was precisely "Pirates! cast recording".

No hits. Nothing to see here, it tells me. And yet it turns out to be exactly the name of this thread....

I don't believe so. I seem to recall there was talk around the time after the production closed that Kristin was thinking about including a couple of her songs from the show on her next studio album, but that didn't come to pass.

The “Threepenny” thing was absolutely because of what you mentioned with Lauper and I’ll always be sad about that. Say what you will about the production as a whole but a lot of those songs were so damn good, they deserved a proper (In-studio) recording.

Has there been an announcement for a digital release yet? The CD is supposed to be out September 19th. There doesn't seem to be an announcement about the digital release, if it will be out the same day or earlier.

This was rough.

Choreography felt the moves Susan Stroman rejected........

#17

PIRATES! cast recording

Choreography usually stops being a problem on cast albums.

Amazon still says September 19th for the physical CD. The same record label delayed the digital release of Floyd Collins by a month. No digital release was ever announced for Pirates so we just have to wait for an announcement or update from the label. If it’s like Floyd Collins we won’t get an update until September 18th.
