If you saw Nudie at nine or ten, I hope it didn't warp you too badly :) Other than a warped sense of humor.
Re the original recording - it's a by-product of doing it in a day (not two days back then - one day). Orbach sings a LOT of the score, he'd been doing the show non-stop for months and it was recorded on their day off. There were many takes of each song, and they got it as good as they could and they had no way to keep going or to fix it. I'm just happy we finally did.
Morosco - I wish we had some magical control over the USPS, but sadly they keep raising their rates and lowering their service. Someone on my site who lives in Olympia, Washington still hasn't received his copy, while someone who lives fifty miles from him has. Hopefully you'll get yours soon - all pre-orders were shipped last Wednesday morning, all at the same time at the same post office.
I have it at last in my grip! Listened to both discs 3 times last night driving my partner and friend Theresa crazy, but it sounds so amazing I couldn't stop. I couldn't believe all the detail that was brought out of your mix. Everyone is going to say this, but it sounded like hearing it for the first time--actually, it was like hearing an all new recording of the same cast that had been lost to the ages.
Congrats on the rave review, bk! Well deserved. How have MGM and Co. responded, if I may ask? Varese?
Bruce...when I contact the post office I'm assuming they will ask the following questions: 1) Was the CD shipped on 6/30? 2) What address was it shipped from? 3) What class was it shipped? 4) Any tracking number? 5) Any insurance?
As I've said repeatedly - if it was preordered prior to or on 6/30 it was shipped the morning of 6/30 - all copies went out. It was shipped from Kritzerland - our address is on our website. It was shipped first class. No tracking number and no insurance - impossible to do without raising our shipping costs.
If it's lost (and it's way too soon to make that assumption) then I have emergency copies here and can replace. My guess is it is sitting in your post office somewhere. Again, we have no control over whatever problems the USPS has. I wish it were otherwise.
Listening to the second cd on headphones at ok and I can't believe how beautiful this is! It's weird there won't be a Promises, Promises OBCR in the retail market in 6 months. Again, congratulations on the brilliant success! Orbach would be proud, and Bacharach should be as well.
I did not intend to imply that he is not with us still. Has he ever spoken up on the revival or this new recording? I assume he has moved on from this project, but I did read a piece with Hal David not too long ago.
Burt Bacharach was extensively involved with the current 2010 Broadway revival of PROMISES, PROMISES. So much so, he has spoken about the 2 additions to the musical: "I Say a Little Prayer" and "A House is Not a Home" and why they were added. He approved their inclusion and stated that he always wanted "I Say a Little Prayer" in the show even back in 1968.
He also attended, as did Hal David, the revival's opening night:
I guess I can announce now - it will take effect at midnight tonight:
The response to the new remix and pitch-corrected version has been really overwhelming and positive - unfortunately, by the time the word began spreading the two CD set of 1000 copies had sold out, which left a lot of people out in the cold. So, after working out a special one time only deal with MGM (the rights' holder), I'm happy to say we're going to offer a re-pressing of the remix CD only - 1000 units - that way, anyone who didn't get the set can now, at least, have the remix version. The two CD set will retain its rarity since it's the only release of the original LP mix, and we're calling this re-pressing of the remix a second edition. Packaging remains the same, as does the price.
Ultimately, even though it may not sell out right away (then again, the quick sellout of the two CD set surprised me) I wanted this to be available for a while longer. So, as of midnight, those who missed out and want the remixed version that's been getting "wow" raves all over the Internet can have it if they act quickly. :)
I can't get over how amazing the second disc sounds. You can actually hear distinctive voices on "Christmas Day" and the orchestral details are so rich. This may be rivaling Whoop-Up as the best cast album reissue ever. =)
Hey Bruce, I wanted to ask about the hidden track.
Is there a story about why that was recorded? Was it intended as a B-side to something...were they just playing around in the studio and wanted to do it?
At the end of the session, Bacharach sprung it on Jill and just asked her to go in and do it. Apparently she'd had a reprise of the song when the show was in tryouts. But they decided to only include what was in the show. Also, they only did one quick take - happily she was superb on it, although on the last note she went very sharp and then cracked a little at the VERY VERY end - I fixed the pitch and fixed the crack (something I'm really good at :) ) so now it's perfect. She sounds amazing.
