JOEY EVANS late 20’s-late 30’s. This character is African-American. Jazz singer, with big ambitions to be a star performer in 1930’s Chicago. Confident, charming, amoral, Joey can be a romantic heel who uses women to his own advantage (until he falls in love for the first time). At heart, Joey is an artist - devoted to a jazz sound ahead of it’s time. Fighting uphill battles of racism and the Depression, Joey will let nothing stop him to be on top. Baritone – Baritenor with ability to understand the idiom of jazz and it’s idiosyncrasies.

ENSEMBLE DANCERS:
Characters are African-American women, 20s. Excellent dancers who sing well. Dancers in a Chicago jazz club in 1940.

I have some issues with the original book but it's not entirely problematic. I did like parts of Richard Greenberg's revised book from the last revival, especially the scene where Joey and Linda first meet in the cafe instead of the pet shop from the original. Another new book seems kind of ridiculous.

The WORKSHOP was cancelled...Not the production. They're still working on it. Marin Mazzie did a previous workshop so her passing is putting the next workshop on hold.

Audra actually did do a reading of PAL JOEY alongside Colin Donnell, before the Kennedy Center revival was cancelled in 2012 (revised by Terrence McNally and directed by Christopher Ashley, which got shelved when Ashley joined Leap of Faith...though at that time, Audra would have still been in Porgy & Bess).

Digging a little deeper... that McNally rewrite was originally commissioned by LIVENT/Garth Drabinsky for a 2000 Broadway opening, to be directed by Frank Galati, choreographed by Ann Reinking, and potentially starring Glenn Close and Harry Connick Jr! But it fell apart with Livent's financial troubles.

How does this mean ONLY the workshop? (I'm asking for clarification - because to me, it SEEMS that the wording suggests the whole thing.)
