Why is Mitchel Musso riding on top of the watering can?.. An odd combination.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 11:30amThey should have put Dreamgirls on top of the Apollo marquee. I mean, why perform in oncoming traffic, where cars are literally stopping and weaving to get out of the way!

I can't believe some of these comments I am reading. Seriously, guys?
- HAIR had spot-on lip-synching.
- Actually, ALL of the performances did. It was surprisingly good this year, as compared to years past when you would see performers' mouths move and the audio track's lyrics had already been sung (Kristen Chenoweth/WICKED, anyone?).
- BYE BYE BIRDIE was fine. Just fine. Not a big rousing number, but it showcased Stamos with his physicality paying an homage to Dick Van Dyke (I haven't seen this production yet). It will definitely generate some interest from the older demographic.
- BILLY ELLIOT presented a flashy number with a great disco-sounding tune. The fact that all those girls in their ballerina uniforms pranced around will surely have little girls across the country wanting to see the show.
- SHREK. Surprisingly I thought this was the best presentation of the four. And it got the most enthusiastic response from the live crowd. A known tuner showcased by great costume design and rockin' choreography with dozens of characters every little kid knows. Parents will definitely be looking to see when the show is coming to their nearest city.
I have zero complaints this year, at least for the NBC performances. When the parade is over I will check out my DVR'd CBS broadcast...

Posted: 11/26/09 at 11:39amRagtime performance was fantastic, and bravo to CBS for capturing it so beautifully. The composition, the ferry that happened to pass by, the shadow cast? Almost makes up for the laughable Dreamgirls shoot.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 11:50amCapnHook: I guess I fit into the "older demographic" category(having seen the OBC in 1961), but I assure you that John Stamos was in no way an updated Dick Van Dyke, even if he was trying to pay homage. Stamos looked like a flabbergasted geek. The performance of "Put On a Happy Face" confirmed my desire to stay far away from the Roundabout's BYE BYE BIRDIE.

HAIR had spot-on lip-synching.
False. Sasha Allen didn't look like she was even trying. She was IN synch with the music, but that doesn't mean that the lip synching was convincing. She had no energy at all.
#35re: Parade performances:
Posted: 11/26/09 at 11:53amI loved Ragtime but I thought the lip synching was really bad. Hair was great. Dreamgirls was awkward with the traffic. I kept thinking that there would be more traffic on a busy street like that.

Why do the singersw on the floats all hold mics?
It's kinda silly.
Cortez is a 100% better dancer than Olivo, but she still lacked the spark and crackle that number needs, and that presentation really showed the dumbing down of the choreography, especially at the end.
SHREK was fun, I thought Peter Pan's face was gonna fall off from smiling so much. Is that number in the show? I don't think it was when I saw it.
RAGTIME was beautiful, Stamos just looked ridiculous, that choreography is awful and if that is suppose to be an homage to Dick Van Dyke it fails miserably. Van Dyke has a natural charm and his dancing is in a class by itself.
Stamos seems forced which is strange because when he appears as himself he can be charming but it did not translate in that number.

Gypsy9, "flabbergasted geek" is a terriffic description of his portrayal in that number, but even so, I think the general non-theatre-going public will still give the thought of seeing the show more entertainment.
bjh, I didn't comment on the performance of the number. I merely said that the lip-synching was good, which you agree with it seems. So TRUE, the lip-synching was spot-on.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 12:27pmNo, you seem to miss the point. She was singing at the same time, but her mouth shapes and facial expressions didn't LOOK like she was singing. So the lip synching was NOT good.

ragtime performed?!
I was told that only HAIR BBB Billy Elliot and Shrek were =[
I stopped after Billy.... they had the worst lip syncing IMO.
She wasn't even moving her mouth and the track was still playing lol

I thought Cheyenne was great.
2 issues however:
-They didn't mention Finian's Rainbow. I know 30 Rock is an NBC show but they could have mentioned the show. It needs promotion too.
-Why was he wearing a messenger bag? He couldn't find someone to hold this stuff? (pun intended)
