Alan Cumming's choice of song and arrangements were the strangest I think I've seen for Thansgiving.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 6:00pmI just watched the West Side Story performance on BroadwayWorldTV. It was pretty good. I liked that they did it in an alley. Natalie Cortez is plays a nice Anita, but doesn;t have the full package in that song. Does anyone know where Karen Olivo was? Jennifer Sanchez is so funny in this video. What are the names of the other 2 understudies in that video?

Posted: 11/26/09 at 6:17pmBILLY keeps picking the wrong songs to perform. Why don't they do Electricity or Once We Were Kings or Solidarity, the best number in the show...?
#80Missed Ragtime :(
Posted: 11/26/09 at 6:22pmI was glad that they decided to do a song featuring the ballet girls. Every time I've seen any guest performances from "Billy" it's always been the boys doing Electricity. These girls are funny and cute and are only seen by people actually attending the show. They're rarely even mentioned in the media. For the last week I've seen report after report from hometown newspapers across the country bragging about their local girl who was being featured in the Macy's parade. I'm delighted to see them finally get a chance to "Shine"! (I know Kate Hennig just started in the role and I wish her the best, but I found myself really missing Haydn!)
A click for life.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 7:47pmI thought Natalie did a fantastic job with America, I was super impressed and she can actually dance the part as well as sing it. The Ragtime cast also looked amazing. Hair did a nice job as always as well.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 7:48pmWhen has Karen ever shouted in America? Natalie looks great, but Karen is surely the stronger vocalist.

Because they wanted to do a fun number? They aren't trying to sell tickets. They know they are closing. Why not get people pumped with a high energy number, whether or not it's in the actual show or the curtain call?
You thought that was fun and had energy? It was dreadful and Sutton Foster looked awkward and uncomfortable the entire time.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 8:08pmJust watched the West Side Story performance. Natalie was good but I don't see where all the praise is coming from. She is a very good dancer but a singer she is not. She is shouting and screaming. She is a good understudy for Anita but she is no Karen Olivo.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 8:39pmI actually liked Natalie's vocals better than Karen's, mostly because I honestly don't care for Karen's voice or the way that she sings America.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 8:53pmWhat the HELL were the DREAMGIRLS people thinking??? Putting the girls in the MIDDLE of a busy street with cars literally swerving around them, people pushing trash cans down the sidewalk by them and pedestrians looking at the marquee like "Oh, that must be them"??? REALLY??? Why not do this onstage if you can't get them in the parade? This looked awful and extremely unprofessional. I'd be curious to know if it was the parade folks or the actual show creatives that made this horrendous choice.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 9:36pmWhoa. The RAGTIME shoot looked great, but wow, what happened to the sync? The delay is so bad that I can't imagine that they had that much of a problem lip syncing. Yikes!

Posted: 11/26/09 at 10:37pmafter watching the WSS video, Cortez blows Olivo out of the park. She would be the only reason for me to see this show again.

#92Missed Ragtime :(
Posted: 11/26/09 at 10:41pmLjay I agree. I must of been watching a different performance then they were. Cortez certainly didn't blow Olivo out of the water. She didn't even create a breeze.
#93Missed Ragtime :(
Posted: 11/26/09 at 10:45pmOlivo may be the stronger vocalist (I agree that she is), but Cortez is obviously a much stronger dancer. I'd have to see Cortez in the role to determine whose performance I prefer.

Posted: 11/26/09 at 10:53pmThere must be a lot of Olivo haters out there to think that Cortez' performance was so friggin' spectacular. While she could sing the part, she was definitely having some struggles with the choreography (though it could be the terrain they were dancing on). In the end though, I just don't think she showed the spark that Olivo has in that role to make it so memorable.

What?! Natalie certainly danced the part better than she sang it. I don't think she struggled with the choreography at all. And for the record, I love Karen Olivo. Just not as Anita.
It was dreadful and Sutton Foster looked awkward and uncomfortable the entire time.
Is looking awkward really that new for Sutton Foster though? :-P

Posted: 11/26/09 at 11:15pmThere was something really nice about seeing Ragtime and West Side in appropriately themed locations. CBS did an awesome job minus the whole Dreamgirls traffic thing...

ljay: any info on why Cortez did the spot and not Olivo?
I'm sure the producers and creative team wanted their only TONY winner to do the TV spot.
Unless they are getting Cortez primed to replace?
Most Broadway performers do the Parade because it is National coverage, WEST SIDE wasn't even filmed live early Thanksgiving morning, we got Sutton, Creel, Swenson, Stamos, Beaker, all the Dreamettes, Jackson, etc...
As for all the lip-synching problems, the pre filmed spots may not have even heard the same track we did, and live? Can you imagine keeping up to a track in Herald Square with all the distractions?

Curtain, I do not know why they had Cortez do it. But I would not be surprised if they are preparing her to replace Karen, whenever that may be.

Posted: 11/27/09 at 12:24amKaren Olivo is a major disappointment. I have no idea what her deal is. She was out twice when I saw ITH, twice in WSS, and now skips a parade performance. She must either be really troubled or really entitled. Natalie Cortez is a stunning Anita and she dances the part like a dream in the show. You try dancing in heels in a concrete parking lot and let me know how that goes. At least Natalie shows up.
