FIRST IN THE BRIEFING: American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University will produce Romeo and Juliet in September 2024. It will be helmed by A.R.T.’s Artistic Director Diane Paulus and feature movement direction and choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. It will be the pair’s first collaboration since Jagged Little Pill, which premiered at A.R.T. in May 2018.
I know R&J is overdone, but I still love to see new interpretaions of it.
I haven't purchased an ART subscription in a few years - pre-covid actually, this at least HINTS at that possibility.

Sorry, but Romeo & Juliet? zzzzzzzz

Curious what the setting of this will be, considering the style of choreography Cherkaoui is known for.
This may not be related at all, but Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler just posted on their respective Instagrams “R + J” with the location tag “Verona”.

They feel like slightly too big of stars to do a regional production of Romeo and Juliet, but it’s possible A.R.T. is planning on this being their tentpole production next season with its eye on Broadway.
Wow, rivaling Gatsbies AND R+Js?

Yeah, I saw that too, and Zegler & Connor headlining a stage production of R&J would definitely be an exciting prospect.
But I wonder about the wisdom of doing that - and aiming for Broadway - if Tom Holland's production is presumably aiming for Broadway as well
I have to wonder if Diane is sitting over at A.R.T. getting big mad that Papermill’s Gatsby and now Jamie Lloyd’s R&J are beating her theater to the punch. I’m struggling to remember the last transfer A.R.T. had to Broadway (was it Great Comet??), but this seems to be the first time they’ve had to compete for that trajectory.
And again, this could be totally unrelated to the A.R.T. production, but I highly doubt there’s a movie in development and no commercial producer in their right mind would announce a cold opening on Broadway of a brand new production while Tom Holland as Romeo is already a sellout hit without even opening yet in the West End.
Someone in the comments said it's a film adaptation by Baz Lurhman. If that's true...

Life of Pi was the last ART transfer to Broadway, while the next will be (I would assume) Real Women Have Curves.

Waitwaitwait... what!?! Baz has already done that (I've really got to revisit that movie - I recall appreciating his swings but not liking the overall execution)
But I suppose he's got carte blanche since Elvis was such a monster success, so if he wants to revisit prior material - or perhaps translate his movie to the stage in some capacity...?
I can say with 99.99% certainty, without any insider knowledge, that Baz Luhrmann is not directing another adaptation of R&J. That is so absurd. Begging folks to use some critical thinking here.
Can you imagine TWO R+Js on Broadway in the SAME SEASON????????
It’s interesting that Rachel Zegler has been heavily rumored to have been involved with two previous ART projects, and now three!

Rachel Zegler & Kit Connor Tease ROMEO & JULIET Casting

I have no interest in seeing another production of Romeo and Juliet. At the same time, I would love to see another production Shakespeare's R&J by Joe Calarco (thats the one where 4 prep school boys act out the entire play). Last production I saw was done by Signature Theatre and Joe Calarco directed it and revised it for the times. It was brilliant.
