Congratulations to team JUST IN TIME on recouping their entire $12.5 million capitalization.

Per Paulson: "The show's producers say they hope it will continue to run indefinitely."

Yes.

"The only other new musicals to open since the pandemic and become profitable are 'MJ,' 'Six,' '& Juliet,' 'The Outsiders,' and 'Kimberly Akimbo,' which announced recently that, although it did not make back its money on Broadway, it was able to pay back its capitalization costs and return a small profit thanks to a successful tour."

I’d think that Ragtime would be close to recoupment based on the stellar numbers they’ve been putting up for almost a year now.

Just "new" musicals - because there have been some "new" revivals since 2020 such as The Music Man that must have recouped. On Edit - seems like The Music Man may not have recouped.  Wow.

I would think they are not even close. Yes, it is Lincoln Center and so their budgets are smaller and their audience is partly built-in via memberships. However, the cost of the cast and orchestra alone makes it roughly $850-900K a week, plus other costs (press performances, contract renewal raises, buying out Caissie Levy’s LOST BOYS contract, etc). They aren’t losing money, but it’s not exactly printing its way to recoupment either.

oh wow, i didn't realize they bought out her contract! What does that mean exactly? Did Lincoln Center pay The Lost Boys a fee for keeping her? The money go strictly from to production to production right? Cassie doesn't see any of that money, does she?

I would have thought this was a choice that Levy made, to stay with a successful production that had a very good chance of netting her a Tony Award, and so any contractual issues would have been between her and the producers of The Lost Boys. Is there any reason to think otherwise?

(I agree with your list of the other reasons why Ragtime might be rather expensive to run. Also, is recoupment something that is really well-defined for nonprofit productions?)

I’m making an assumption based on the fact that RAGTIME was not intended to run this long and she was announced as part of the cast well before they extended to June, thus creating a contractual car crash. I feel like Levy had to have signed something binding that LCT would have to work to get her out of. Anything said in the media could easily be spun.

They did not buy out her Lost Boys contract. She left the show before they went into rehearsals so there was no binding contract.
