I was thinking, would Carey Mulligan make a good Sally Bowles?

Oscar winner Renee Zellweger, finishing up the Judy Garland film biography, "End of the Rainbow", was overheard saying that after not winning the Oscar for "Chicago", that she thought that she could remake "Cabaret" because her voice is in the same class as Liza's...thoughts?...
Zellweger’s film is titled JUDY and is adapted from the play END OF THE RAINBOW. Per the playwright himself, this film is based more on fact as his stage play was more fantasy. The film wrapped several weeks ago and is planning an early 2019 release.

I think Mulligan would be an ideal Sally Bowles. She is simply radiant in everything I see her in.

This project was actually announced, shortly after the film of CHICAGO was released and never happened. It was to be a film version based on the Sam Mendes revival. At that time, I think Renee would have made a good Sally.

Yes, that was the story years ago.

Zellweger is too old to play Sally Bowles, although I could see her doing it when she was younger. I think Carey Mulligan sounds like a very interesting choice, and the reality is that she doesn't actually have to sing that well to play Sally Bowles.
Although I liked her in the role and was happy when she won the Oscar (albeit in a pretty lousy category in 1972), I find that I can not even watch Minelli in Cabaret nowadays without cringing. IMO her performances is just to over-the-top.

I'd watch it opposite Tony Shalhoub as the MC (it's a joke calm down but just picture it - it could be glorious!)

Much too old for Sally Bowles since she'll be fifty next year. She'd make a better emcee in a gender changing role reversal. Wasn't it once rumored that Ruth Gordon's name was briefly mentioned for Joel Grey's role in the film version?

CABARET is one of those rare films, that when viewed today, does not appear dated at all. There really is no need for a remake.

There is no way to improve or build on what Bob Fosse did in the film.
I don't think anyone asked for, is asking for, wants, or wanted a remake of Cabaret.

CZJ on Broadway doing it
WTF? Sally Bowles is young woman with allusions and misdirection. Catherine Zeta-Jones is pushing 50. She’d be perfect for Fraulein Kost or a middle-aged Fraulein Schneider.
People, the film version of CHICAGO was released in 2002 — 16 years ago! The actresses in this film are almost 50 years old. They are now age-appropriate for Norma Desmond in SUNSET BLVD (who is 50!).

How old is Sally Bowles actually supposed to be? Is it completely open to interpretation/direction or is there a set age range? I always thought she was supposed to be fairly young because of the lyrics in Don't Tell Mama, but some people say she's in her early thirties. I've never been able to actually get an answer or even know if there is an answer.

I think there's tragedy either way:
if she's 19, it's tragic for a completely different but just as valid reason as if she's 33.

Just because she did Roxy Hart a gal similar to Sally Bowels she thinks she could put this one over. NEIN!

I had heard both 19 and 33, but never knew if either was considered the "correct" answer. And QueenAlice, I totally agree with you on that, so it's really up to the actress/director what's true and what's false about her life. Thanks!
