How the hell does Reidel know that the race for Best Musical is "too close to call"? Obviously he has no way to know, unless he's doing exit polling. Ha! The truth is that he has no clue whatsoever.
How's Dear Evan Hansen doing with white Tony voters with a college degree?
(Seriously, though. It's just Riedel talking out his @$$, like always.)
"I went out on a limb last year and predicted a big night for “Hamilton” at the Tony Awards — and did pretty well in the office pool."
Hahahahahahaha...

I agree that Riedel is BS'ing when it comes to Best Musical race, but I think he is serious when it comes to the best play race.
I don't think most people thought ADHP2 had a chance two/three weeks ago but Rudin has done some serious campaigning and spent the big bucks. I think it now has a chance come Sunday and Oslo is definitely not a lock.

Riedel writes "Sources say one of the extremely rich producers of 'Dear Evan Hansen' was going to be profiled in the Times, but wiser heads killed the story." Who do you think he is talking about? Stacy Mindich?
I think it is a too-close-to-call race. That's the general sense of things, anyway.

Im with Kad on this one - and I will add that secretly love reading Riedel's columns. The sense I've been getting at industry events is a lot of burnout on DEH, love for Comet's design but not show, and 'little show that could' for CFA. I think this could split the ticket a bit. Im thinking that puts CFA in the top slot, but only narrowly.
I've also been hearing that Stacey Mindich, DEH's lead producer, has been very bad at the politics of this- the schmoozing and wooing that has to happen behind the scenes. There's more to awards than a public-facing campaign or the quality of work. There's just a general feeling that what should've been a slam-dunk for DEH has greatly diminished.

I almost wish there was no behind the scenes politics involved. I know people will vote for different reasons (this will tour well, I like this person personally/hate this person) but I wish they just saw the shows and voted. No "well, they had a fun food truck or party" influences.

And that's why you should never set store by any of these awards. It's all stuff and nonsense.

What are you going to do with yourself when DOLLY wins Best Revival? On one hand, you'll get what you want but on the other hand, it means those "elitists" voted for it-- shattering your BS theory that the "powerful" turn their noses up at "real" musicals. Your poor conscience.
A8 doesn't have a conscience.

First of all, how do you know it will win? Falsettos is offered for the elitists' delectation.
If Dolly! wins, it simply means the elitists were either outnumbered this year, or were fearful to expose their bias so blatantly.
And if Dolly! does win, as it obviously deserves to, of course we'll all be happy (well, perhaps not you.) But you know what? Win or lose, I'm already happy --- actually beside myself with happiness. Why? Because one thing is certain. That deadly, pretentious, tuneless, bore, that ultimate snob-set critics' darling, Sunday in the Park With George, will not be winning any awards this year. And that fills me with gladness.
Oh, and LYLS, I hope your shoulder is strong enough to hold that huge chip on it, which only seems to grow larger by the day.

Oh man, that's delicious. These elitists fancy themselves so extraordinary, pious, and intelligent, but are scared to show it when it comes to privately voting for awards. And people here say After Eight isn't funny.

Can we all sit back and ponder for the moment the irony of calling other people elitist while using the word delectation in the same sentence?
Yes, A8, the critically-acclaimed revival of Hello, Dolly that is so hungry for ticketbuyers to shell out hundreds and hundreds of dollars that it won't even release more than a couple publicity photos is truly a populist theatrical victory.
I seem to be in the minority, but I don't take too much away from the awards that have been handed out so far this season. Given that DEH & Comet are both ineligible for those this year, I still think a lot of these categories for TONY this year are going to those two shows. I do believe Dolly is a lock, as well as Miss Midler.

Wait, how did Falsettos become the "elitist" choice over Dolly? Did I miss something? I think we need to define what we view as elitist...
while I wasn't looking, the intellectual barrenness of A8's posturing troll BS has come into the sunlight.
After Eighty, you're mistaken. This year, Hello, Dolly! is the hands-down choice of the elitists. Only elitists can afford the tickets.
As Louise says, "At these prices, I'm an ecdysiast."

After Eight is one of our most hilarious posters. I don't know why we tend to keep reacting the way we do but he is a showman and he knows it. I don't doubt that he believes what he says deep down/in a less exaggerated manner but he seems to see everything and pay a lot of attention to details. He constantly quotes lyrical details from shows he apparently hates all the time. He knows them better than most fans I'd guess. He probably owns the FOLLIES pillow. And he was probably the first person to buy tickets for the most recent Sunday revival. I am sure he loves putting on this mask and stirring people up - just as I love watching it. He is a comedian.

Well, at least he's not making asinine, xenophobic, ignorant comments after terrorist attacks or presidential elections. You know what I mean?
PJ, I was always too lazy to look up the exact spelling of "ecdysiast" even though I'm obsessed with Laura Benanti's delivery of that line in the 2008 GYPSY cast recording. Thanks for the lesson.

I mean are you trying to derail this thread? It's difficult to respond to this kind of political trash the brainwashed regressive left tend to shout here (who are so relatively conservative they belong to right-wing parties by world standards), so all I will do is reiterate that I sleep easy knowing 1. my opinions about religion and the cause of terrorism are shared by intellectual, scientific elites, and 2. my opinions about Bernie vs Hillary ended up probably being right - and thankfully I can sleep easy in a country with a high minimum wage, public healthcare and accessible education - the exact policies I was trying to advocate for in the first place - so there is no need to continue this bitter tirade, and 3. I am so happy and comfortable knowing that I seem to be one of the few people on this board holding truly progressive ideas consistently - whether that be advocating for the most progressive candidates or for criticising middle-aged belief systems and ideas that continue to oppress gay people and women to this day.
Call me ignorant, call me xenophobic, call me whatever. But if there is no substance to your post all I can say is I'm very comfortable with my progressive views and the consistency in my beliefs. It's getting to a point where I wonder why some of you just don't block me if you clearly don't want to actually participate in a discussion but shout the puppet buzz words you've been trained like a dog to recite whenever you hear certain triggers. Now, I will concede I intentionally write in a slightly arrogant way/in a way that is likely to stir some emotions. But I still try to have substance to my post and keep to discussing the actual ideas at hand - I'm not shouting that you are probably a bunch of brainwashed hypocritical regressive leftists who need to stop supporting conservative candidates and conservative ideas - even if I believe it. (Except for this post of course). The childish name calling here is somewhat pushing me over the edge into this territory.
