I’m also still hoping that (eventually) get Much Ado. I suspect much of it depends on the availability (and desire) of Hiddleston and Atwell. With all the buzz around Evita, I haven’t heard anything more about this
There are few worse ideas for Applegate than Matthew Broderick. And I say this as someone who was stumping for him as Herbie last year when they were supposedly looking for a star.

I know there are a lot of people who don't like MB. I will only point out that he won a Tony for playing Finch in How to Succeed and he had had at least one truly iconic role in the movies, playing Ferris Bueller. I would think that both of those roles position him to play Applegate.

Broderick has essentially coasted on his Producers schtick since 2001, to diminishing effect. As Kad said, he’s one of the very very few performers who would get me to actively avoid a production at this point. I’m sure he’s a nice enough guy, and he clearly loves the theatre, but talk about a black hole of stage presence.

He’s had an extensive stage and screen career, period. The bigger issue would be if he actually be able to sustain the role eight times a week since, critically, his stage performances have elicited diminishing returns post-PRODUCERS.

When a theater is renovated for a production (e.g., the Wilson for Cabaret or the Broadway for Here Lies Love), is the team who made the renovations responsible for returning the theater to its original configuration at the end of the production’s run? (And if so, are those restoration costs factored into the production’s capitalization costs?)

YES.

Much Ado and Evita will jump the pond.
Broderick's finest work in years was his recent visit to the Criterion Closet where he spoke eloquently about movies he likes.

(ok, he was pretty fun as Andrew Barth Feldman's goofy father in NO HARD FEELINGS but that was a glorified cameo. Not the devil.)

I would also point out that Applegate is not exactly a big role. If not cast with a star, I would expect it to be assigned to the supporting actor category by the Tony Committee. Broderick had far more to do in Plaza Suite (which I did not see, so I cannot opine on the quality of his performance). As I remember, he sings just the one song, which is not vocally demanding.

The MB idea doesn't make sense to me - Mr. McClure was spectacular in the show.

I wouldn't say that Applegate is "not exactly a big role." I just saw the show over the weekend and Applegate is very active throughout even though, yes, he only has one song. Rob McClure was phenomenal - - I wasn't even a huge fan of his before seeing it, but left totally wowed by him. It would be a shame if they recast him with Broderick, who I haven't felt at all impressed by in recent years and who I doubt can deliver the range, energy, and oomph that Rob McClure gives. I think casting a new Lola would be a far more prudent move.

Now that might sell some tickets.
About a year or so back, there was a rumor that Bryan Cranston was eyeing Damn Yankees. I wonder if it was this revival? He would have made a fine Applegate.
