A bad show I had fun at. A lot more fun than at a lot of other musicals I saw this season.
When was Stroman’s last hit? I’ve never thought she was a good director and I’m mystified that she still gets work
The idea of doing a diegetic show is interesting in concept, but boy did the book scenes drag
As someone noted above, they needed more dancers.
It seemed the less you were invested in the TV show the more likely you were to like it
They really needed to figure out better storyline first Ivy’s troubles (and the consequential cupcake debacle didn’t help)

I guess this means Schmigadoon doesn't have much chance to make it to New York?

I am an extremely big SMASH tv show fan, couldn’t even tell you why because I know the TV show is messy but it’s my fav mess. I literally watch it once a year lol and this Bway show took so many wrong turns. I saw it last week after winning the lotto and the mezz was extremely extremely empty.
The songs that everyone wants to hear get interrupted constantly with scenes, the songs that do get fully sung, like Moving the Line, are fantastic! Bombshell has amazing songs, let the people sing these songs!
A third Marilyn was extremely unnecessary, they make it seem like Chloe is going to be the equivalent of that Sharpay wannabe in HSM3, but turns out, oh, she doesn’t even really want the part. I found all the social media stuff really cringy, personally.
Ivy becoming a diva/method acting after reading a book didn’t really land for me. Would rather her be struggling to play Marilyn and then method acts to try to understand her or something. Rather than her being amazing at the start, make her struggle or something.
Super sad we waited a decade to hear these songs and the show just didn’t find its footing. The irony that Bombshell’s book was a mess and so is SMASH’s…
“Stayed open”…? For how long? A week longer, until 6/29 instead of 6/22…? Great use of $300k for a show that is already hemorrhaging money. Please.”
(I was referencing the Boop “petition”…please.)

Would it really be that much harder than, say, Funny Girl? It seems like the best shows are always packed with demanding songs. That’s what makes them good shows.

I don’t know how a show selling 68% of the theater and heavily comping nearly the entire run could be seen as not doing “that bad.” I love the cast and hope to go to closing but this show had a pretty rapid decline in the last few weeks.

Sort of a clueless statement from her, but...whatever? Hope she's looking forward to a LONG break in between jobs!
Probably not the smartest thing to post so publicly, and wouldn’t be surprised if she’s asked to delete it shortly. However, she has spoken openly on her Instagram over the years about her struggles with the business - emotionally and financially with bouncing from job to job and still being an ensemble member - so this isn’t a surprising reaction from her. She often says the quiet part out loud; others are just thinking it.
Losing your job suddenly sucks. But it’s also The Business and producers really don’t like when actors say things like “They gave up on us” in their Instagram stories.
I mean at the top of the list of misfires here is not having Ivy and Karen sing "Let Me Be Your Star" - that is arguably the most memorable moment on the tv-series. I had such high hopes for this and left very disappointed. Good luck to all those involved.
I wish we would move on from treating every show closure as an unjust tragedy.

If you want real injustice, lempicka. 2 more weeks would have got it to the tonys and would have allowed me to see it. So extending every show to no end this year makes no sense.

I also think people believe somehow that social media buzz about a show and talking about it translates into ticket sales and that's not how it works!

another show like lempicka or swept away where the arrogant creative team bought into their own resumes to the point where they couldnt see the bad art right in front of them that they were constructing
when something like this abomination gets to the point of being produced on broadway one wonders where how and why the checks and balances failed
did no one ever sit back and realize this was a piece of crap that neither fans nor non-fans would enjoy
some producers simply have money to burn

BEST post of the month!
I must admit looking at the numbers I guess this closing seems obvious now but I/we/everyone was so focussed on 'Boop' I didn't even really think much that SMASH was on the chopping block this soon...is a bit of a shock.

The crying. The whining. The comments about how no show gets a chance anymore. Pardon my language, but it's stupid. If a show isn't selling, they're going to close. Period.

Oh no! Swept Away was different. It was a very moving work of genius that decadent NY audiences just weren't prepared for.
The song choices could have been better, and the staging needed some rethinking, and the book could have used some tweaks. Maybe if they had thrown out the entire jukebox score, and come up with totally original songs...
But you know, totally not in the same category as all those other things that flopped.
Libby Loyd is making her Karen debut tonight. I believe this is Bowman's first missed performance.

Libby Lloyd is a lot better than Bowman as Karen!

I went into this with pretty low expectations having seen The Last 5 Years probably helped it exceed them.
Is this show perfect, no. Did I laugh ALOT, absolutely.
Was it bizarre to see a flop tv show remixed as a Broadway musical, yes. Did it all make sense no.
But I would give it a solid 7 out of 10. Also I was pleasently surprised by the cameo from Jeff Hiller as a swedish influencer.

If you go to her Instagram stories right now, you can see her throwing her entire script binder into the trash…
