I spoke to a cast member who confirmed that they’re going into the studio in “2 weeks or so” to record this.
i can’t wait!

I'd have been shocked if it didn't happen, considering their star, but this is great news!
Hope it's a complete recording of the score as presented onstage. Maybe even with the Judge's Johanna as a little bonus? Or some type of Groban bonus track?

Yeah it shouldn’t be surprising but still great to actually confirm it. And I should have asked about how much is being recorded! Grrrrrr…

Not surprising, but still wonderful news

Yay! I also hope it’s complete and not highlights like the 2005 and 2012 recordings. Although the 2005 revival album has much more material than the 2012 London revival album.

I will never understand the reasoning behind the cut 2005 album. Apparently they recorded way more than they intended (?) and eventually had to spill over on to a second disc. Shame they didn't just go right ahead and record what was left - Parlor Songs etc. It's actually one of my favorite Sweeney recordings, and surely one of Patti's bests vocally. The 2012 London cast album is an abomination, leaving out crucial numbers like Poor Thing, and other character defining numbers like Green Finch. The mixing and quality on the 2012 CD is appalling too - sounds like they are literally in your eardrum.

Fingers crossed for a complete recording. I’m fine without the Judge's Johanna since it wasn’t in the original production and isn’t performed in this one either. I don’t think there actually is an official cast album of the complete score in English? The New York Philharmonic concert album comes close but there are a few minor cuts.

OMG!!!!! YAY!!!!! It's probably gonna be a couple of months before we get the recording, but it will all be worth it. I did manage to hear a bootleg audio of the show from the first preview so that will have to do for now!

To those in this thread asking for bonus tracks not featured in this production, with the producers hopefully listening in: the LuPone revival of Gypsy recorded practically another disc of material long cut from the show as well as incidental underscoring and dialogue not included in the main body of the album, with zero practical reason to do so. If they're gonna miss the opportunity to do the same for Sweeney, then I feel truly and profoundly sorry for them.

The OBCR is pretty much complete. It has the material that was cut by the time the production opened: Judge’s Johanna, full Contest, and full Parlor Songs. It also has the full Wigmaker Sequence with The Letter which is rarely recorded. It is missing the optional Beggar Woman’s Lullaby which was written for the original London production.

We can almost guarantee this will be recorded by Reprise Records (a subsidiary of Warner Music Group), the label that has represented Groban almost his entire career. They don't usually do cast albums, but did a nice two-disc album for COMET, so maybe they'll do the same here.
Tommy Kraser was the one of the people who did the great double-disc Sondheim albums in the mid-aughts, but he's mostly retired now. (He actually didn't do the Gypsy album, tho, that was Rob Sher.) Those albums are great for people like us but inherently don't do gangbusters with the masses. That being said, if there's to be any type of bonus track on this album, I bet it's a Groban track and maybe one that could get radio play.

It would make sense how much they are emphasizing this lush orchestra, you would think they would want to capture it in its entirety. Fingers crossed for a full recording.

I may be completely misremembering, but I think I recall reading somewhere that Michael Ball financed the 2012 recording, which is why we got what we got. I believe it would have otherwise gone unrecorded, based on what I remember reading at the time. It may have been here that I read that...

Josh last album sold 25,000 in it's first week to debut at number 17 on the big chart.
Wouldn't be great id a cast album could sell like this.

It’s far more standard these days to get mostly complete cast recordings, so I would be rather shocked if that didn’t happen.

As Groban is the main attraction here, along with the orchestra, I would also surprised if there’s not a full recording. The Great Comet cast recording is a favorite of mine, and that includes everything in the Broadway incarnation of the show.
That said, I’m not expecting extras either, especially since some possible additions have never been part of this revival.

OBC had plenty of stuff on there that didn't make it past opening, it's not like it's impossible. (Improbable, yes.)

Cannot wait to have Groban's "No Place Like London" "My Friends", "Pretty Women" and "Epiphany" on record. What a voice and a perfect vehicle to take Sondheim's incredible work to the next generation.
