"I declined a white director not on the basis of race but on the basis of culture. White directors are not qualified for the job. The job requires someone who shares the specifics of the culture of black Americans"
-August Wilson
For a split second I thought it said Cher was going to direct Joe Turner.
You know, if there is one white director who can successfully direct this show, it is Bartlett Sher.
Hopefully they cast this well...
For my money, its Wilson's best play. But it is a bit of a shame they couldn't take a chance on a black director. I mean, was Kenny Leon's dance card full???

Hahah, I thought it said Cher for a second too.
YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!
F//K YEAH!!!
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...
You know, my mind went to Kenny Leon too, but I think it would be terribly typical to have Kenny Leon direct a play by an African American with an African American cast...he does that far too often.
I would LOVE to see what George C Wolfe would do with this show...
I was just going to say that George C. Wolfe would have been a wonderful choice.

Hmm...I'm assuming this won't take the Beaumont?
They won't close South Pacific for this. It will take another house on Broadway.
And I doubt Wilson's estate, who are very protective of his work, would not have ok'd Sher if they didn't think he was capable.

Well, Lord knows the man is capable.
DIVIDING THE ESTATE is an LCT production and it's playing at the Booth. Don't worry, SOUTH PACIFIC ain't going anywhere.

August Wilson himself approved my white father to direct productions of FENCES and PIANO LESSON. I guess he figured that 30 years of directing Equity productions made him qualified.
After all, Lloyd Richards did direct a few "white" plays in his career...

Twilight actor Edi Gathegi has been cast in this according to him on the red carpet of the movie Push...
"There may be another reason, meanwhile, that Gathegi's in the dark on New Moon: He recently told producers he'd signed on for a spring Broadway production of the August Wilson play Joe Turner's Come and Gone. "When I told [Summit] I was going to the stage," said Gathegi, "they said, 'No you're not. We need you.' And I said, 'Cool. Let's try to do both.' We start the play in February and go until June."
