Was this show ever on Broadway? I know there's a stage musical of it, just curious if anyone has any details or an idea of what the stage show is like.
Our local production of Singin in the Rain was wonderful! I forget the name of the lead right now but he was great and danced really good. He was somebody "Big' and I'm sure someone here would know his name but I CAN'T REMEMBER IT!
I don't see why this movie was ever turned into a stage show, the beauty about it is how cinematic it is. I love it as a movie and understand why it didn't work on Broadway.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
The stage version that is released is actually wonderful. Everything is directly from the movie with the exception of Lina's song "What's Wrong With Me?" which is beyond fabulous. The Broadway version was quite flawed in using Twyla as the director/choreographer and not sticking very closely to the book. The London production with Tommy Steele was even worse. Had the "regional" version been on Broadway it would have faired very well I believe. Paper Mill has a recording out with the uber fabulous and dear Michael Gruber as Don. If you come across it grab it! I did a production of it in 1995 with Dirk Lumbard who was phenominal as well.
"For me, THEATRE is an anticipation, an artistic rush, an emotional banquet, a jubilant appreciation, and an exit hopeful of clearer thought and better worlds."
~ an anonymous traveler with Robert Burns
Michael Gruber has done several productions of the show. I've seen two; the last one, a mini-tour in Houston, Seattle and Sacramento, was fabulous. Michael Gruber Singin' in the Rain tour
I saw it this past summer at North Shore Music Theatre, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That was the first (and only so far) stage version I had (have) seen. I think Randy Skinner would do a great job choreographing this show. He has a great grasp of that "Golden Era of Hollywood musicals," in aesthetics and style.
