I don't think the show has a prayer -- no pun intended -- but if it is to have any chance at all, it has to have a compelling story that is effectively and well told. By most accounts, it hasn't had that in prior incarnations.
There will be some devotees who go to hear Carlebach's music in a Broadway theatre simply for the novelty of that experience, even though they can hear it at home on recordings or in temple. There may be some who are just intrigued by the story. But neither of those constituencies are going to be sufficient to sustain the show for more than a few weeks in a Broadway-size house at Broadway prices.
Only if the show gets/has gotten a lot better -- producing far better word of mouth than it has now -- or if the producers are prepared to fund losses (beyond whatever reserve they may have as part of capitalization) does this not come and go very quickly.

I saw Carlebach in the 70s in St. Louis and it was an amazing show. He had a personal aura about him - and when he sang, he moved the room. But, he often played clubs in the Village and synagogues, and not a Broadway sized house. He was billed as a "folk" singer.
I have no idea if this show will be any good or what the interest level really is - (except they should probably cancel the Friday night show since no one from Crown Heights will attend that night)but I couldn't conceive of Jersey Boys being the hit that is and continues to be.
Oh, as for Southern Jews, Judah Benjamin was Secretary of State and Vice President of the Confederacy - fleeing at the end of the War of Northern Aggression and becoming a very successful lawyer in England.
BTW, the synagogue my mum would have seen him in would have been in the NJ/Philly Area.
She is going to see if she still has those albums.
He will be in the lobby selling cd's after the show

The Crown Heights crowd won't be there on Friday or any other night
-prohibition against hearing women singing.
Maybe if sales are slow, they'll change it into "The Whipping Man -- The Musical"
Who is producing this? I cannot figure out who is going to buy enough tickets to fill one performance, let alone an open ended commercial run. And honestly, I wouldn't go if they gave me a free ticket in the best seat in the house and dinner at a five star restaurant.

Seeing it on the 24th. Can't wait.
I think I'll skip this one and wait for Small and White, the Theodore Bikel bio-musical.
Just saw the BWW photo coverage article and as usual, BWW has to include EVERY PHOTO TAKEN. No less than 10 photos of Zarah Mahler singing a solo. Walter McBride desperately needs an editor.
'Small and White, the Theodore Bikel bio-musical.'
I thought that was the title of the Billy Barty bio-musical.
I'm still perplexed that this got its sh!t together and PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE didn't

Here's a show real. My favorite is when the put up the quote "The Real Deal" from the New Orleans Beat?!! also, what type of stories does Ambush magazine publish?!

Why wouldn't New Orleans Beat have a quote? Soul Doctor ran there (though I think it had a different title) and I believe a good deal if not all of the footage in the reel you provided is from that version. Most of the people quoted in the reel are in New Orleans. You can tell by the accents and the background.
Likewise, Ambush is a New Orleans publication, a free weekly GLBT magazine.
Also, that's the exact same reel that overkill posted on the previous page.

I predict this show will be fail harder than LEAP OF FAITH and SCANDALOUS, and I will take pleasure in seeing it burn.
