I think sadness and depression are related, but two different things. I think that depression is more all encompassing and takes over your life, whereas sadness is a smaller scale. Also, depression can be an imbalance in brain chemicals and has medication to rectify it, whereas sadness is caused by an emotion and (usually negative) reaction to something. I think Olive is more of a sad figure, because while she wants her mother to come home and misses her, she is also able to make a new friend and almost win the spelling bee, which are things that make her happy.
I agree. I think Olive is more sad than depressed, because she does have things in her life that make her happy, she just has the one main thing that makes her sad, lack of parental attention. But it sounds like she gets good vibes from spelling and probably other things in her life, and she does have a very good friend (the dictionary :) ) and makes another at the Bee.
My sister saw Spelling Bee and loved it. I'm trying to convince my orchestra teacher to let us see it when we're in New York but he wants us to see Sweeny Todd and everyone else in the orchestra wants to see Wicked (which I've seen twice).
I missed two, but one of them should be right for the Sf show. Heehee, here Logainne says she's going to be Secretary of Education under president Gavin Newsom.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...
