Many years ago Sydney Pollack remade Sabrina (Not a musical) fixing all of its small and large problems and it turned out to be a very fine film. But a year later it was just an asterisk. Same here?

the most intersting part of this is Kushner but I'm still much more interested in the Ivo broadway revival.

The Sabrina remake was a fine film, but fine seemed to be all it was. The original, for its faults, had Billy Wilder's direction which is just so in-step with that genre, and the trio of Hepburn-Bogart-Holden. Bogart seems to be the odd-one-out but for some people he worked in the role. It's also just funny to see him play that sort of role. I think Julia Ormond was ok in the title role, I liked her in other things, but clearly what made the original a classic was Audrey Hepburn's luminous performance and a distinctiveness that only she could have brought to it. Ormond seemed a bit sleep walky in it at times.

I actually liked the remake better than the original.

Posted: 10/24/18 at 10:00pmIt sounds exciting! Basing it on the Broadway version is great. I’d be thrilled if they use the original stage orchestrations (Bernstein himself didn’t like the “enhanced” arrangements for the film), include the ballet, and restore the awful cut in “A Boy Like That.”

From some of the comments here you would think that the original film was a complete hatchet job to both the book and score.

I don't think anybody said anything like that. They're just wondering if they will put things back in from the original Broadway version that the 1961 film version cut out and are a bit excited about it. I admit that I never got the full effect of "Somewhere" until I saw the Broadway Tour with the ballet and Anybodys singing it.

Yes, I agree. The Spielberg production may be wonderful--hope it is!--or it may fail, but, as Kushner points out, either way nobody's going to stop loving the 1961 movie.

When asked about rumors that she’s going to star as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story, Cabello says, “I don’t think so. I feel like this has been the first year and a half of me getting to know myself. I have this confidence now that I haven’t had before, of listening to myself and not really doing brain damage on ‘Should I release this song?’ ‘Should I do this this way, or should I do it that way?’ ‘Am I the way this person sees me, or am I the way I see myself ?’” Instead, Cabello says, she’s been locking herself away again, exploring ideas and writing lyrics and thinking about a new album. “I know exactly who I am, and I know what I want to do,” she says, smiling, “and I’m just not ready to give up that voice for something else right now.”

That's good news. I think Rachel Zegler would be the perfect choice for Maria in terms of talent, type, singing voice, charisma, and combination with the actor that plays Tony.

AGREED on the Kushner piece. I'm annoyed, offended actually, that Spielberg is putting holds on so much of the diverse POC talent pool that is NYC without hiring them to keep IN THE HEIGHTS hamstrung. #CockBlockSS

I just checked on Google and I think she's been auditioning for WSS in the past few months. I think she just graduated from high school or is a senior.
She has some videos on YouTube, like this one doing Maria's monologue at Bergen Performance Arts Center:

Yes, that's her. Here she sings: A boy like that/I have a love:

I wonder how far she is in the audition process for the film now. They must be working with only a few girls by now.
#193Spielberg's West Side Story
Posted: 11/15/18 at 6:20pmThere is no way that girl is/has been in callbacks for this. If you are in callbacks for something like this, there is no way it would be considered acceptable to share it on social media. I also doubt a newcomer will even end up in this movie, but even so, I doubt the team would be happy with her sharing her progress on social media.

I haven't checked her social media too deeply or anything, but has she been sharing anything? I didn't really see anything like that. I do think she's sort of perfect for the part though.

I think she is very discrete about the audition process, others have said she's in the mix.
I would love a newcomer, creating stars is much more exciting than hiring the next current fleeting popstar or actor. In this day and age people are always looking for new sensations and true talent that fits a role is sensational. Also, it gives the movie a sort of validation of existence in 5 years from now. Russel Crowe in Les Mis for example does not do this. Nick Jonas in The Les Mis registration did also not do this. And the list is endless. It should always be about really fitting the role.

Funny cause I know she's in consideration for In The Heights as well... and then there's the Rachel Zegler rumors for both movies. And now there's this Moreno/WSS casting, after the incorrect ITH announcement last month.
Happy that there are 2 big budget Latinx musicals being made (at the same time!), but the constant overlap proves how underrepresented we are in Hollywood.
