Some early details have leaked from the Kennedy Center Honors celebration that honored Barbra Streisand tonight.
According to The Huffington Post:
"Queen Latifah opened the tribute to Streisand, saying she "threw out the rule book" to chart her own career. "She took to the stage like butter on a bagel," Latifah added in a video tribute.
Idina Menzel from Broadway's "Rent" and "Wicked" sang "Don't Rain on My Parade" from Streisand's 1964 musical "Funny Girl." She mixed in some new lyrics "Hey there, Ms. Streisand, I am your biggest fan."
Beyonce Knowles rose from the stage floor to sing "The Way We Were." And the young musical star Ne-Yo grooved to Streisand's 1965 hit "Lover, Come Back to Me," with four male dancers.
"Barbra Streisand is the epitome of emotion in music," Ne-Yo said. "You feel every word, that's something that artists in my day and age don't really pay attention to..."

when is this going to air on tv?
scratch that.. december 30 i saw... why so long a delay?
I'm shocked Rosie O'Donnell didn't get involved in this.
Queen Latifah didn't sing?? No "People"?
In the NYT piece she comes across as...less than gracious:

And is she seriously--seriously--not wearing her medal in that picture? Seriously??

Why wasn't Wing invited to perform?
grooved to Streisand's 1965 hit "Lover, Come Back to Me,"
Huh? What? That was part of Barbra's niteclub material back in 1962-63. She performed in on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1962, included it on her 1963 THE 2ND BARBRA STREISAND ALBUM and performed it on her MY NAME IS BARBRA TV Special in 1965. It was NEVER a 'Barbra hit'.
Oy!
it may not have been a 'barbra' hit but she's known for it. you knew about it.
What? No "Main Event" megamix?
The whole thing sounds like a train-wreck to me. I can't even remember the last 'Honors" I watched.
Edit:
And what the hell is she wearing?! She looks like Fruma-Sarah in black.

I am so amused she had to smooch with Bush.
Latifah, Beyonce and Ne-Yo? Really? How underwhelming. And to imply that Beyonce is anywhere near the same caliber is insulting.
I would have loved it if they had gotten Linda Eder to sing "Don't Rain on My Parade". But that might have upstaged the honoree.
Has Ne-Yo come out of the closet yet?
I thought about Linda Eder too singing "Don't Rain on my Parade". And I'm glad I'm not the only one who's a bit 'baffled' (for lack of a nicer word) that Beyonce & Ne-Yo got to intro Babs. I mean, SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?! At least Idina can sing better than all of those put together!
As much as I like Linda Eder, she would have been a mistake.
I think the talent they got for the honor was just fine, they usually do have pop singers for these. It's not like the material they were singing was all that difficult or anything.

madbrian, do you think Linda Eder would have been a mistake because of how she just blows that song out of the park live? I have seen her do it live twice and both times people were like "Streisand must have a hit man out after this woman"!
Re "Lover," she sang it on her 1965 TV special. The 12 year old who wrote the article prob took that date in his/her research.
Re the presenters, CBS wants ratings and they figured Beyonce, et al., might bring in some people later this month.
I think the hefty-bag like gown she wore she also wore during her latest tour and is on the CD cover. She looks too tan, too blond, and too. . . well whatever. Wish she were thin enough and witty enough to wear her outfit [and turban!] from the "Great Day" scene from "Funny Lady." She might get a hunk of her gay fans back.
Instead she looks like a yenta going to her grandson's bar mitzvah in Great Neck.
And now she is making a snooze album with Diana Krall.
Come back down the Stoney End, Barbra Streisand, Barbrs Streisand.
JohnBoy-- "Fruma-Sarah in black" is the best description of... well, anything I've read all day. Thanks for the laugh!

Who picked these people to pay tribute to BARBRA? What do any of them have to do with Barbra?
Menzel was in the Funny Girl concert done several years back, if that counts. But seriously, they have nothing to do with Streisand. Carol Burnett, Bob Goulet and several other friends and co-stars paid tribute to Dame Julie and Liza, Chita, Joel Grey and a few other friends paid tribute to Kander and Ebb. What did Beyonce ever do for or with Barbra?
