Is there no one who has seen Count Stovall in the show?

On her infamous hotline, Robin Strasser mentions that she and her friend saw Cat this past weekend. As huge JEJ fans, they were very disappointed to learn that he would not be going on, but that his understudy (Count, though not mentioned by name) did a very fine job. The ladies were particularly impressed with Terrence and Phylicia.

I am under the impression that Jones is just out for a week.

Though considering how much the producers have invested in Howard with ads and all it would be a sad thing if he did leave early.

I do find Howard's slave comments to be a bit over the top if you ask me.

There's no way this show is going to recoup.

All four actors are above the title, so whenever one of them is out, people are going to request refunds.

Sorry to point this out wannabe but you have no idea whether this show will recoup or not and you know it. First off, the finances of the show are not known to you unless you are an investor which I'm sure that you're not. Secondly, your comment regarding people seeking refunds is correct in that they CAN do this but the fact is, over the past week that Mr. Jones has been ill, they have NOT done this in large numbers.

The show's weekly nut costs have to be around 350-400k per week with those four big names on the marquee. The show is making about 275-325k (an average of 675k gross) a week in profits. I'd guess that the initial investment was 4 million. So at an average of 300k a week in profits it would take about 13-14 weeks to recoup. This obviously does not include costs for marketing and other expenses. Again this is incredibly rough math. The show in the ninth week of the run and it scheduled to close in nine more weeks. The trick really will be if the show can maintain the numbers that it is doing during Terrence Howard's absence.

Is it *really* only nine more weeks until June 22nd?

WoW! June 11th is creeping up on me sooner and sooner...

Looking forward to this show. BIG-TIME!

Frogs... your deductive reasoning is sensible but there are many variables that you don't consider... What if the headliners are working for scale? What if the rest of the cast is as well? What if the set was really cheaply constructed? Etc... You get the point. Making assumptions about "nuts" and assuming that numbers printed in Variety are completely revealing does not add up to a basis for wannabe's comment.

Saw the show tonight. Rashad and Rose were spectacular, Count was in for James Earl Jones and was fine, but nothing special, Terrence was atrocious with a glimmer of "not so badness" in Act II that quickly faded by Act III, and the two who play Mae and Gooper were also terrible.

That's why I called it rough math... and I'm aware that it is rife with assumptions. Assuming that it has even lower running costs it would just recoup all the more sooner.

Not true. While the audience hasn't been flocking to the box office to refunds, the show's daily ticket sales were reduced dramatically (it went from being sold-out daily to tickets available at all levels).

As for my comment about Howard's Oscar nomination a fluke, I stand by it. He is a horrendous stage actor and a barekly passable movie actor. Look at any of his films, and Hustle & Flow is the only one that is close to being good. The director must have been really patient, because there is nothing he does as an actor that outshines any of his costars.

I don't know if Terrence is returning or not but his daughter (one of the no-necked monsters) I hear, has left the show for good.

Good riddance. I've seen all manner of child actors and she was by far the absolute worst. And very unprofessional. During curtain call of the performance I saw she wouldn't stay in one place, and she removed a seat cushion from the sofa and started playing with it until the actress behind her grabbed it and put it back!

I'm new to this board and I've only read a few of your posts, but from your comment above, YOU sound like YOU have a PERSONAL vendetta or problem with Terrence Howard and/or the 'CAT' production.

His daughter is around 10 years old and this was her very FIRST stage appearance and I thought she did great. She was perfectly annoying, just like the play requires. In case you didn't know the 'no-neck monsters' weren't exactly angels.

You are out of line.

I don't have any vendetta against this production of Cat...but I do have standards, and when paying a lot of money to a show I expect the actors to at least be good. Terrence Howard is bad in the role, and his daughter, who has maybe two lines, is even worse. All she has to do is taunt Anika's Maggie and she sounded like she was thinking about the lines before she said them. Just because she's a child does not make her immune from criticism. I daresay that the show is going to be much better now that the two of them are gone. Once they hit curtain call, the show is over. She couldn't stand still for a minute, and I found it to be very rude. I have seen shows were three year olds acted more professional. Her age is no excuse.

When I saw the show, NONE of the children were able to stand still. She is the oldest of the children. The other little girl and little boy were just as restless. Why aren't you criticizing them?

Terrence is that you?

HaHa. No it's not.

I'm not defending Terrence's performance at all. I tend to have a soft spot for kids.

Honestly, I was really expecting more from Terrence's performance since he is the "second-coming of Denzel Washington".*heavy sarcasm*
I've grown disappointed with his performances as of late. I think he's lazy and picks films and directors who will allow him to "get by" with his performances. He's pretty much been able to ride off of the hype of his work in 'Hustle & Flow' and 'Crash' and his 'good looks'. But that's just my personal observation. Updated On: 4/14/08 at 04:33 PM

Because they weren't restless when I saw it. They stayed mostly still untill Terrence's daughter started messing around with them. But even then they stayed mostly where they belonged.

So basically Terrence Howard and his daughter ruined "CAT" for you? Ok.

I agree with Fosse in regards to Howard's performance. He came off as someone that didn't want to be there.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he took out his daughter because he didn't want her to have to deal with the same things he is going through.

What I don't understand is that he signed on the dotted line. No one forced him to do it. I can understand if performing in theatre might not be his cup of tea but at least he should be a professional about the whole thing.

I forgot offhand the name of the actor who is replacing Howard during his time off. But, I do know that he is not a no name specially to people in the black community. So, even if he were to finish the run it can be do able in terms of tickets sales and all that stuff.

@winston89: Didn't he quit on the first day of rehearsal b/c he said he couldn't "handle the part"? Sometimes you think you want to do something until you do it and then you discover you never want to do it again. But I agree, once he signed on the dotted line there is a level of professionalism that comes with fulfilling your contractual obligations.

Not for anything, but I do wonder if Terrence is coming back. This morning, they changed the 2 larger marquee signs to remove Terrence and add Boris. There's also a huge picture of Boris on one of the street-level signs by the box office doors.

It's quite a bit of expense for a 3-week run.

FYI - the new marquees list James Earl Jones first, and Boris last.
