I can’t begin to know the producing strategies, but given the frequency of posts and threads for this particular show, it’s interesting that we didn’t have other dedicated threads or “is this the week they announce” type posts for the other shows that were doing poorly in terms of sales since reopening. We’re still in uncharted territories."

Actually, there were plenty of “ is this the week…” postings for “ Diana -The Musical” from opening night until they did announce it’s final performance.

Is this the week….

"Is this the week" seems to be a valid question for all but the big hits/"legacy shows" this season. Though at this point, the only other show that appears to be bleeding money is American Utopia, which seems to be trying to play through the end of its run in March.

When will producers learn that it’s incredibly difficult to create a show based upon an iconic legendary female artist. It’s always going to pale in comparison. First there is too much to fit into the book and they are almost always sanitizing the hell out of it.

For instance, the HBO documentary on Tina was one of the best I’ve ever seen on an artist and it was profoundly sad. Most of it was melancholy but it was her truth. She wasn’t happy much of the time, even during her fame and she was exhausted working past when she wanted to so she could live comfortably later in life. How do you musicalize that?

Instead we get these Vegas shows that run the lead actresses into the ground.

Cher Show tried and it was definitely more intriguing in Chicago. By the time it got to Broadway it was a Vegas show. It ranked hard. How do you replicate Cher? You can’t.

Summer was horrible but at least they tried a different concept that was edgier and I respect them for that. It still didn’t work. It’s very hard to tell the story of an enigma.

The Go-Gos tried reinventing their catalog for their musical and that was too far off the road.

If they ever attempt a Madonna musical that will be a world of hurt. No way to do that.

A Cyndi Lauper bio-musical might work with the right performer. Someone with the right star quality. It would work in the same way Beautiful worked. You’re dealing with a songwriter so there is emotional ground to cover in the framework of the songs.

I have a feeling that Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey jukebox musicals are going to be on Broadway sometime this next decade - maybe even sooner.

Never played on Broadway, though it did go on a US tour.

Anyway, like it or not, I just have a feeling Whitney and Mariah will both eventually get the bio-jukebox treatment.

I’m aware…but it was still widely produced. Was more so saying too late for that one.

I don’t know. I mean we are in a pandemic but it does seem like the jukebox train has slowed down a little. Maybe we’ve exhausted the boomer crowd catalog? I like shows like “& Juliet.” Putting a new story to the songs. I much prefer that route.

I remember sitting through the Gloria E. Bio musical and there’s this whole scene with her tour bus crash and it’s like we know she didn’t die. She was at the opening night… so why do we need that? To just be dramatic for dramas sake? C’mon.

You can’t have a story about Gloria and NOT have a scene with the crash leading into “Coming Out Of The Dark”. You just can’t - her fans would revolt. I remember saying this when the show premiered but if you weren’t in Florida at that time (Miami born, here) it’s impossible to articulate just how important that time was. I was in 6th or 7th grade and we had actual writing assignments  to send letters to Gloria in the hospital. And not just once but it was like a weekly thing we did, tracking her recovery. That scene where Gloria reads those letters - that’s not some fictional dramatic moment written in, that was REAL.

I guess it depends on your definition of bleeding money but to me just because you have the money to bleed doesn't mean it is any less red. I also expect we will see some surprises that are not being contemplated around here.

I think my issue with bio-musicals is that most of their lives just aren’t that interesting. Tina obviously had a tumultuous life, but the show glanced over it. Give me Mamma Mia or a well done jukebox musical any day.

Fair! I would predict the downfall of CHICAGO, too, and perhaps some others, but to paraphrase Brian Cox from earlier this week:

American Utopia is doing Free Ticket Giveaways through NYU's discount ticket service. I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing them with other schools too and I also wouldn't be surprised if they can't make it all the way through March. I looked on Seatgeek after I got the ticket offer and it's EMPTY for the nights they were offering.

As far as Tina, I'm kinda surprised it's lasted this long, but I'm not going to root against it. I'll never want a show to close. I also can't really think of anything hoping/planning to come to Broadway that NEEDS the Lunt-Fontaine, especially with the Shubert and Imperial open right now (and probably the St. James soon too).

Once Upon a One More Time does not necessarily NEED the Lunt, but it has been linked to that space for a while now. If Tina somehow makes it through the winter, I’d be pleasantly surprised.

I don’t wish this show, it’s cast, etc. anything negative, but damn these producers are out of their mind. The Lunt is already a less-than/desirable theater, but the staunch resistance to discounting tickets is wild considering what they’re working with.

Once Upon a One More Time was never “linked” to the Lunt. I know for a fact it was slated for the Marquis prior to the pandemic.

Yes and it is linked to the Lunt now. It is slated for a Nederlander house, all of which are occupied with long running hits or soon to open shows.

Exactly Jordan! There is no way to convey that. I remember me and my sister crying when she performed Coming Out Of The Dark. It was a historic moment of television. Even my mom was emotional.

I feel like the Lunt is def a desirable theater. Right off Times Square. Great foot traffic. Across from Hamilton.

I didn't know that Once Upon a One More Time was already linked with Nederlander, but it did occur to me as the one upcoming show that might want a 1500+ seat theater. Most of the other stuff would probably want something closer to 1000.

The Lunt is a fabulous, desirable Broadway house. The only thing that makes it undesirable for certain shows is its size (1500 seats) at a time when producers look to put shows into smaller houses.

Britney would be foolish to come to Broadway this season. Wait till summer or fall when hopefully there's a more hospitable environment for family-friendly shows that attract tourists.
