Holy Ship.
Well, my concern that the show was of suitable scale for this house turned out to be totally unfounded. They really took their scrappy little off-Broadway show and made it into one hell of a spectacle. Granted, I do miss some of the low-budget bits that gave me some big laughs downtown (and the set too), but I found it to be the same mindless fun as I did when I last saw it.
The updated jokes are absolutely off the wall and I was audibly guffawing many times, although I am curious how much of the book has changed from downtown, to London, to here since I feel like some stuff was very new. I’m definitely here for the beefing up they did of Ruth, presumably to get Jim on board, and he did NOT disappoint. I half expected them to water it down as he is not known as a singer or dancer. But he got his lipstick and character shoes on and RAN with it like a full out camp queen on steroids. I was thoroughly impressed and, of the featured performances, I would actually score him for a Featured Actor nod. Melissa Barrera was also the surprise of the night because she took her ingenue vibe and squeezed all the comedy out of it, and also has a great set of pipes - she could make a second career out of this.
Marla and Constantine were reliably great, though Marla seemed a little shakier in her Celine voice than before - though chalk it up to being the second show at the end of a long week. She did nail the improv bit, which was a scatalogical gag about “Easter Eggs”. Deborah Cox, reliably, belted her ta-tas off with “All By Myself” as only she could.
I wish I could say I was thrilled by Layton Williams, as I absolutely love him as a performer, but his Iceberg just did not hit for me (bah-dum-bum) the way I wanted it too. I can see the West End going crazy for it because it may have played better in the smaller house and Layton is a know entity over there, hence the Olivier. However, it felt very much swallowed up amidst this cast and staging and I did not see the compelling reason he was imported from London when many performers here in NYC (some who are even part of this company) have done it before and done it better. This could’ve been a huge break for Avionce Hoyles, Polanco Jones, or Kyle Freeman, and I think punting that opportunity was a mistake.
Overall, it was worth the $60 I paid and I’m gonna see it again probably. I would recommend it for those looking for absolutely brainless entertainment and a collective of really gifted performers. Have a few drinks, pop an edible, and go enjoy yourself.
