Reminds me of an actual '60s Broadway poster. Simply, kitschy, and perfect.

Posted: 12/5/09 at 11:33amWell, now bj, to be fair, I think they are going for that hazy half painted photograph look of 1960s advertising which is brilliant since these two are playing characters half their ages.

Posted: 12/5/09 at 11:34amYeah just a touch of airbrushing. Does anyone remember the side by side before airbrushing/after comparison pics of her APPLE TREE photo?

MB, the hazy quality is one thing. I totally dig that. But look at her forehead. This picture shows what it REALLY looks like. :-P

big deal.

Posted: 12/5/09 at 12:02pmNobody said that they didn't, dshnookie. It's just VERY obvious here. They are attempting make Cheno look 20 again (she's 41).

Posted: 12/5/09 at 12:55pmThe poster is pretty amusing. Very Rock Hudson / Doris Day. Circa 1965. Which is totally inappropriate for the show, but totally sensible for the current cast. ("Let's focus on the TV/B'WAY-Q, people, NOT whether there's gonna be a WHIT of reality to the enterprise.") Notice that there are no other names on the poster.... Any word on who's playing the Marian Mercer (The Tony-winning part), A. Larry Haines (nominated) or Edward Winter in the (nominated) "Sheldrake" (aka Fred MacMurray) roles? Hmmm....

There is obviously a great deal of savvy planning going on here and let's face it, these two can hold an audience with the raise of an eyebrow. This show may surprise those with hate in their hearts and razors for tongues.

I love it. I don't care about airbrushing, let it happen. I only get angry if they actually alter the person's physical feature, ie. Emma Watson's bust being made larger for a Harry Potter movie poster. But making some changes to skin and things I'm fine with. This show better be just amazing!
Also, at least it doesn't make people belive that there's a new show called "Patti Lupone Gypsy."

LOL! BWW is ALWAYS very... ahem... SURPRISED... then, at least by that definition.
P
P.S. I think this poster perfectly sets us up for what the show will be like onstage in this production. And that's all I'm gonna say!

I think it's a good-looking ad. My one issue with it - Fran Kubelik, the character that Kristin is playing, is a confused young woman battling with her self-esteem. She picks the wrong men in her life and tries to kill herself.
Now, I wouldn't expect the logo to have Kristin with a bottle of sleeping pills in her hand, looking clouded by self doubt. That wouldn't sell many tickets. But I was surprised that she's looking in Sean Hayes' direction with unbridled glee, with a beaming smile.
Neil Simon's book for Promises has some spectacular gags and the Bacharach and David score is one-of-a-kind. But the show is not all go-go kitsch like "Turkey Lurkey Time" and "The Grapes of Roth". There's also an undercurrent of anxiety, loneliness, feelings of low self-worth that all of the major characters grapple with. (It happens in many of the songs too: "Half as Big as Life," "Knowing When To Leave," "Wanting Things," "Whoever You Are," "I'll Never Fall In Love Again," "Promises, Promises"). So while the ad makes the show look like a rollicking film comedy like Pillow Talk, audiences may find the show itself something else altogether.

Love this poster! I worked on the graphics for special edition of The Apartment on DVD. This is a few years later, but these guys nailed the right style here.
I agree with smaxie about Kristin's photo, though. Still, it will sell tickets.

If you put an accurate description of what the show is about, you'd probably turn off the general public. (I don't recall anyone playing up the rape aspects in Oklahoma!)
Even the original 1960s graphics had very little to do with the actual content of the show, as Smaxie just pointed out so well.
