I think Capn's revised predictions are very close to what we'll see announced in January.

I saw LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA yesterday and thought it was overrated. I enjoyed it and thought it was impeccably put together (the cinematography, direction, and a few performances are absolutely stunning) but I found the writing to be weak and uninvolving. I know I'm gonna be stoned by you all for saying this but I left the theater completely un-moved. Out of four stars, I'd give it two. I don't know...I just didn't get that emotional resonance from it that everyone else has been talking about. Watanabe is a great actor though and the camera work on the movie is incredible. I didn't get to see FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, unfortunately, so I can't compare the two. But as far as being the year's best film; LETTERS is not even close in my book.

COME EARLY MORNING, like HALF NELSON, was a great film that deserved more attention than it got when it was in theaters. Ashley Judd deserves an Oscar nod for her performance even though that is NOT going to happen. If it was up to me, the Best Picture nominees would be:
DREAMGIRLS
THE DEPARTED
HALF NELSON
LITTLE CHILDREN
VOLVER

even though I think we can pretty much unanimously agree the nominees will be LMS, DEPARTED, DREAMGIRLS, QUEEN, and BABEL.
