For sung-through shows, think of the show's Book as its structure/storyline. Yes, there is minimal spoken dialogue, but you can't just write a bunch of songs and string 'em together randomly and put on a show. Generating the ideas for the songs, manufacturing them, and placing them properly and strategically is what comprises Hamilton's book, and Lin did it expertly, which is why he will win. It also won't be unprecedented—Les Miz won Book in 1987. I hope that helps (please let me know if it didn't)!
sarahb22 said: "I guess I'm a little confused. I always thought the book of a musical was the spoken dialogue; anything not spoken was considered a lyric, which would then be nominated under score (music/lyric.) Is that not accurate? I'm guessing not?"
A book/libretto involves not just spoken dialogue, but narrative framework and story.
A show without a book would be a revue.

Broadway Forever2 said: "Hamilton will easily win book right? The Drama Desk awards couldn't even nominated any musicals for book because they didn't think any were that good "
Because the Drama Desks nominators are morons. I can think of at least five books this season worth nominating, since they include Off Broadway.
Re: books, the structure of a musical and the order in which events happen, what we call story, is all the book. Without a bookwriter, you don't have a musical.

I was absolutely captivated by her and honestly, I'm gonna be more sorry to see her go than any other cast member from Hamilton. She is so far from being the weakest link in Hamilton. (Although I understand why not everyone would put her as their top performance either)."
I agree. I'm seeing the show again on Tony Sunday, and the two I'd be most heartbroken to miss are Soo and Diggs. Soo, particularly, was so effective as Eliza, and brought tears to my eyes and moved me beyond words with her emotional and at times chilling performance.
Ok, I'm caving and posting my full list of predictions. Genuinely can't remember the last time so many quality, well-reviewed shows opened in one season! Asterisks by who I think will win.
BEST MUSICAL *Hamilton School of Rock Shuffle Along Waitress
Spoiler: American Psycho (sub for School of Rock)
BEST PLAY *Eclipsed The Father The Humans King Charles III
REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL *The Color Purple Fiddler on the Roof She Loves Me Spring Awakening
Yes, I am predicting a tie and therefore four nominees. I hate the idea of this brilliant (and well-reviewed) Spring Awakening not getting a nomination, but I can’t see them cutting any of the other three. (I think Fiddler’s the weakest, but that whole cast & creative is Tony-bait.) Hoping that putting it in writing will work like Oprah’s Secret and make it happen.
REVIVAL OF A PLAY The Crucible Long Day’s Journey into Night Noises Off *A View From the Bridge
LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL Laura Benanti, She Loves Me Carmen Cusack, Bright Star *Cynthia Erivo, The Color Purple Audra McDonald, Shuffle Along Jessie Mueller, Waitress Phillipa Soo, Hamilton
Predicting a tie here, too. I just don’t see which woman they’d cut since they’ve all gotten raves. Phillipa Soo has the weakest role, but I just can’t see them leaving her out in the Year Of Hamilton.
LEADING ACTOR IN A MUSICAL Alex Brightman, School of Rock Danny Burstein, Fiddler on the Roof Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton *Leslie Odom, Jr., Hamilton Benjamin Walker, American Psycho
I think Zachary Levi will unfortunately get the shaft.
LEADNG ACTRESS IN A PLAY Annaleigh Ashford, Sylvia *Jessica Lange, Long Day’s Journey into Night Lupita Nyong’o, Eclipsed Sophie Okonedo, The Crucible Nicola Walker, A View From the Bridge
Spoiler: Michelle Williams, Cicely Tyson
LEADING ACTOR IN A PLAY Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Fully Committed Frank Langella, The Father Tim Pigott-Smith, King Charles III *Mark Strong, A View From the Bridge Ben Whishaw, The Crucible
Spoiler: Jeff Daniels, Gabriel Byrne. Probably for Ben Whishaw. Too many very deserving actors this year.
FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple *Renee Elise Goldsberry, Hamilton Jane Krakowski, She Loves Me Keala Settle, Waitress Adrienne Warren, Shuffle Along
I’m predicting a J-Hud snub.
FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL *Daveed Diggs, Hamilton Christopher Fitzgerald, Waitress Christopher Jackson, Hamilton Isaiah Johnson, The Color Purple Billy Porter, Shuffle Along
Spoiler: Nicholas Barisch, or any of the other men in Shuffle Along. I don’t think Jonathan Groff will make it in this year. I know I’m going out on a limb with Isaiah Johnson, but I thought he was really fantastic, and I think the committee is going to honor Color Purple quite a bit.
FEATURED ACTRESS IN A PLAY Megan Hilty, Noises Off Jayne Houdyshell, The Humans Zainab Jah, Eclipsed *Saoirse Ronan, The Crucible Saycon Sengbloh, Eclipsed
Spoilers: Phoebe Fox, Andrea Martin, Cassie Beck. Hell of a competitive category.
FEATURED ACTOR IN A PLAY *Reed Birney, The Humans Richard Goulding, King Charles III Ciarán Hinds, The Crucible Rob McClure, Noises Off Michael Shannon, Long Day’s Journey into Night
Rob McClure is a bit of a long shot, but he had me crying laughing so hard that I’m giving him the nom. Spoilers: John Gallagher, Jr., Arian Moayed
DIRECTOR OF A MUSICAL Michael Arden, Spring Awakening *John Doyle, The Color Purple Scott Ellis, She Loves Me Thomas Kail, Hamilton Diane Paulus, Waitress
DIRECTOR OF A PLAY Rupert Goold, King Charles III Joe Mantello, The Humans Liesl Tommy, Eclipsed Ivo von Hove, The Crucible *Ivo von Hove, A View From the Bridge
CHOREOGRAPHY Andy Blankenbueller, Hamilton *Savion Glover, Shuffle Along Spencer Liff, Spring Awakening Casey Nicholaw, Tuck Everlasting Hofesh Schecter, Fiddler on the Roof
Dames at Sea or On Your Feet as a spoiler in place of Tuck, but I think that beautiful ballet at the end will give Tuck the edge.
SCORE Sara Bareilles, Waitress Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Bright Star *Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton Andrew Lloyd Webber & Glenn Slater, School of Rock
BOOK OF A MUSICAL Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, American Psycho Julian Fellowes, School of Rock Steve Martin, Bright Star *Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton
ORCHESTRATIONS August Eriksmoen, Bright Star Joseph Joubert, The Color Purple *Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton Larry Hochman, She Loves Me
Spoiler: School of Rock
SCENIC DESIGN – MUSICAL Es Devlin & Finn Ross, American Psycho David Korins, Hamilton David Rockwell, She Loves Me *Walt Spangler, Tuck Everlasting
Spoiler: John Doyle, Color Purple
SCENIC DESIGN – PLAY Derek McLane, Noises Off Tom Pye, Long Day’s Journey Into Night Jan Versweyveld, The Crucible *David Zinn, The Humans
LIGHTING – MUSICAL *Justin Townsend, American Psycho Jane Cox, The Color Purple Howell Binkley, Hamilton Jules Fisher & Peggy Eisenhauer, Shuffle Along
LIGHTING – PLAY Jon Clark, King Charles III Natasha Katz, Long Day’s Journey into Night Justin Townsend, The Humans *Jan Versweyveld, The Crucible
COSTUMES – MUSICAL Katrina Lindsay, American Psycho *Paul Tazewell, Hamilton Jeff Mahshie, She Loves Me Ann Roth, Shuffle Along
Spoiler: Tuck Everlasting
COSTUMES – PLAY Wojciech Dziedzic, The Crucible Clint Ramos, Eclipsed *Tom Scutt, King Charles III Michael Krass, Noises Off
(Edited for formatting. The preview totally lied to me.)
Aren't we predicting any Tony love for Roundabout's Therese Raquin? I personally think Keira Knightley definitely deserves a Leading Actress nomination.

I think Knightley was surprisingly good in Therese Raquin (I'm usually not a big fan of her acting...) but I think the other women who are up for Best Actress outshine her. In other years I think she could snag a nomination, however, it's just an amazing year for women and I think we'll see that tomorrow!
I feel like every single acting category this year is an embarrassment of riches. Like, any other year I'd think you were completely nuts if you said that Lea Salonga will probably get shut out of a Best Actress nomination, and yet here we are. Same with Keira.
Therese Raquin will probably be nominated for sets and costumes, but I doubt it will be remembered elsewhere.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I feel like there are always some unexpected curve-ball nominations. Anyone want to guess what some might be?
If I had a guess at a curve-ball, I might say it would be Spring Awakening getting a significant number of nominations. But maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I too saw SA and fell in LOVE with it however I just can't see it getting much love after having what some consider to be the best season on broadway in a very long time
I wouldn't be surprised to see Hughie get a nomination for set design, which I don't think anyone has mentioned. I didn't see it because I heard it was terrible, but most accounts I read described it as a terrible performance on one of the most beautiful sets of the season.
I thought the set design for Therese Raquin was stunning as well.

Hell, Spring Awakening receiving any nominations would be a surprise.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
With the exceptions of swapping out Walker for Levi in lead actor and Porter for Barasch in featured actor, you and I are 100% on the same page, theateraddiction!

Any show other than Hamilton should get a Tony for bravery...
I would KILL for a Lesli Margherita nomination for best featured actress, but I don't know if it's going to happen. She is incredibly talented, but the fact that Dames of Sea closed is going to eliminate her. And with powerhouses such as Renee and Jennifer up for the Tony, for her to win would be a miracle. (hehe the Matilda references). It's a matter of time until Lesli gets a Tony, this just isn't her year. Maybe if Zorro comes to Broadway?

I venture to say that Tucker signed on to Wicked knowing that a Tony nomination wasn't...going to be in the cards.
But hey, guess we'll find out in the morning
"
Lol. I actually saw the show Saturday and met her at the stage door after. I told her she needed a Tony after that performance and she kindly replied "that would be nice!" in her frickin cute Belfastian accent. What a talent queen of kindness

Um please no. I'd like the next season to be shows with actual substance (like, a plot), because the current one has really raised the bar significantly.
