Has anyone else gotten it/heard it yet?
It's REALLY well-produced. Literally every song is worth listening to. I think we may have a last minute threat to HAIR or N2N's Grammy. The score doesn't hold a candle to HAIR or N2N's but this CD is really great. The music sounds fantastic and even the admittedly bad songs (mainly ALWAYS A WOMAN) sound pretty good.
Everyone is in fine voice and Allison Janney, especially surprised me by how good she sounds. I'm really enjoying the CD..anyone else?!

I love it as well! I love how all the dream sequences sound. Around Here has been in my head the past week!
And yes, AJ sounds great! Especially in One of the Boys! Good for her.

I was just coming back to edit my post to say "duh, they're selling it at the theatre". I totally forgot about that.
I'm still jealous though

Posted: 7/10/09 at 3:56pmI'm liking it. If nothing else I'll use the first track as an alarm clock to wake up in the morning. It'd be good for that.

Posted: 7/10/09 at 3:58pmThe only real good song in the score is Get out and Stay Out.

I agree that it is a very well-produced recording. But honestly I feel it's a hot mess of a score. I have not seen the show yet, and was really excited to get the cast recording and see the show this month, but after listening to the score I honestly have very little desire to see it.
The opening number is great (even if in a show about sexism and the problem women deal with in the corporate world, the first line is sung by a man), but the little sections given to Doralee and her husband and to Judy are very generic. Megan Hilty is doing an impression of Dolly Parton, in my opinion, or at least that's how it comes off on recording. Alison Janney does a good job with what she is given, but "One of the Boys" almost crosses the fine line between homage/rip-off, there are a number of songs I feel it almost copies. "Shine Like the Sun" has a lot of corny, sappiness to it. Stephanie J. Block only really shines in "Get Out and Stay Out" which I think is one of the few successful songs in the show.
I wanted to like the album so much, but I really didn't. Just my opinion. I do agree that as an album, it works quite well but I don't think it deserves a Grammy over the perfection that NEXT TO NORMAL and HAIR are.

Posted: 7/10/09 at 4:10pmI totally don't mind the score. The book, on the other hand, is a REAL hot mess.

Posted: 7/10/09 at 5:15pmThe one thing I don't like about the CD is the exclusion of the monologues in the finale.

I thought the exact same thing!

I'm with ray.
And, for the record, Hilty was basically told to do a Dolly impression, she does it in the show and on record.

to ray-,
I think you should still see the show to see whay you think of it. The dialogues and scenes are very funny and very entertaining. It may be a case where the songs work better on stage then they do on the cd for you, I felt the score worked very well when staged.

...Hilty was basically told to do a Dolly impression...
Untrue, she said on numerous occasions that Dolly let her do what ever she wanted with the role. It was HER choice.

Posted: 7/10/09 at 6:21pmI've listened to it once and I really don't love the score. Or like it very much, at least not right now. I really like "Shine Like the Sun" though, as cheesy as it may be. Nothing else really jumped out at me.

The reason I got a CD player alarm clock was to avoid those noises lol

Posted: 7/10/09 at 6:29pmI got it Wednesday at the theatre and can't stop listening to it! I'm really surprised at how much I actually like the score- again, no where near the calibre of next to normal's score, it's really a great album!
#17re: The 9 TO 5 Original Cast Recording
Posted: 7/10/09 at 6:37pmI agree the score is beyond weak

Posted: 7/10/09 at 6:54pmThis is the most underrated show of the season- by far.
#19re: The 9 TO 5 Original Cast Recording
Posted: 7/10/09 at 7:46pmIt's tacky, cheesy, flimsy, bubblegummy, and paper thin... but I'm addicted to the recording like it's crack.

I really didn't know so many people disliked the score. I mean, it's nothing ground-breaking or revolutionary but it's fun and well-suited to the show I think. For Dolly's first Broadway outing, it's not exactly a homerun but it's a solid double or even triple. I really hope she tries her hand at writing for the stage again. She's incredibly talented and could really churn out a great score at some point in her career.
Like I said the book is WAY, WAY weaker than the score. I don't think anyone can deny that.

I know it's not that great, and the book is a hot mess, and yada yada yada, I really love this CD and show! I think for Dolly's first Broadway show it's quite fantastic!
And to the whole "man singing the first line in a female power show" (MINI SPOILER ALERT?) It's Andy Karl who is on the womens' side, so it makes more sense once you (the audience, not a direct attack) learn that.
And I'm with those using the first song as an alarm!
The CD is really well put together, and I agree it has a chance of getting a Granny nom?!

Posted: 7/10/09 at 8:02pmI love the recording, but they might just nominate it because Dolly wrote it. She has won a ton of Grammys.
