If you're a Cheno fan, APPLE TREE. If you're a Sondheim fan, COMPANY. If you're both a Cheno fan and a Sondheim fan.........YER ON YER OWN, KID!
do what i am doing :) going to both in two weekends : )cant wait.
... btw .... is this a matter of you are ONLY going to see one. Or just right now you can only go see one. Cause at that point you may look at end dates and i just assume company will last longer than apple tree. So if u can get out before company closes go to Apple tree?
COMPANY
There's nothing special about THE APPLE TREE.

I saw both and overall enjoyed The Apple Tree more.

Well before you stone me let me explain myself!
COMPANY and THE APPLE TREE are two very different shows and it is hard to chose one over the other. In my opinion, COMPANY is not for everyone. I don't think that the subject matter is for everyone. A married couple or a person who has been married is going to appreciate it more than a person who is 18 and has never even thought about the idea of commitment. Also, the directing is not for everyone. Some people like big old fashion Broadway shows and don't like more abstract pieces of theater.
I think that THE APPLE TREE is more for the general audience. The performances are wonderful, the music is great, and the story is fun. You can't really go wrong with it.
I know nothing about Spacedog78. I don't know if Spacedog78 is a boy or girl, what kind of theater he/she likes, if he/she has been married etc. I would be very hesitant to recommend COMPNAY to someone that I know nothing about because COMPANY isn't for everyone.
Woah, speak for yourself neddy! I am 18 and I have to say definitely Company. I LOVE that musical!

I will bet you $50 right now that you will appreciate it ten times more after you are married or in a long term relationship. I never said that an 18 year old wouldn't love it, I just said that if you are married or have been married or are in a long term relationship you will be able to appreciate it more.

OK, let me first say that I haven't seen either production, but I would recommend Apple Tree - it's never revived!
Stephen Sondheim has never been married, and he wrote it!

I have no idea what your personal taste in theater is, but having seen them both, I would say that Apple Tree is a far superior show. Company has some fantastic songs and is more interesting to look at, but the cast (with the exception of the fantastic Raul Esparza) can't come close to the amazing talents of people like Kristen Chenoweth and Mark Kudisch. Don't listen to the people who are saying Kristen is just doing Glinda all over again-she's not. Company is hot, but Apple Tree is really quite sublime.

A) Stephen Sondheim didn't write the book
B) Stephen Sondheim unfortunately can't get married, but I am sure he has been in an relationship to the same affect (although I a not sure)

They're completely different shows in tone, intent and style. If I had to choose I would probably see Company but I would rather see both.

Neddy--George Furth, who wrote the book, also hasn't been married (can't get married). But I think the idea you have to be married or in a relationship to enjoy the show is pretty off. Company is a more serious musical, Apple Tree is lighter in tone. I like both shows, see whatever you're in the mood for.

I think anyone can enjoy either show, regardless of their marital status or lack thereof. However, I would definitely see The Apple Tree if you can't see both of them. It has one of the best casts currently on Broadway and is a really beautiful and quirky piece of theater.

Again, I never said that.
There is a big difference between the words enjoy and appreciate. I never said that you can't enjoy Company if you are not married or never been in a relationship to the same affect. I have never been married or in a realtionship to that affect and I very much enjoyed Company.
I said that people who are married (or who can't get married but are in a relationship) will appreciate it more. I think that goes for any musical out there. You appreciate it more if you can relate to it more. The material is more relevant to your life. It is the same reason that WICKED appeals to a certain demographic, because they can relate more to the material than a forty-five year old can. That does not mean that they won't enjoy it.
Company
It all comes down to the same conversation that people were having yesterday: art or entertainment?
Do you go to the theatre to be moved, inspired, provoked, and stimulated?
If yes, see COMPANY.
Do you go to the theatre to have fun and not be challenged?
If yes, see THE APPLE TREE.
