Here's the scene: an audience is waiting to see the first show to return to Broadway in over a year. The cast, which has been quarantined in bubbles all week, and have been escorted from hotel to theater and back again every day, as a group, arrives for the filming. Audience goes wild. How is that "staged" or as Tag wrote, not "genuine"? Hell, how could it even have been avoided?
Sure it was filmed, because that reaction was expected. Were they not supposed to have filmed it? I'm glad they did
Sheesh! How this makes you "cringe" instead of giving you warm and fuzzies escapes me.

If that were an actual audience, the theater would have called in the ushers (as they are a part of the building's fire and evacuation plan). They did not do so. Also, why would the cast have been quarantined only to let in a group of people who were not quarantined. While staged is a harsh word, there certainly is a "planned" aspect to it.

I really don't understand why everything has to be black or white for some people. The "audience" consisted of family and friends. Of course their enthusiasm was genuine. It's been an emotional year and, presumably, these folks shared the anxiety and hope and sadness and despair that most of us experience either directly and/or in relation to our own friends and family. It's tone deaf to hear and see their applause and think it was insincere, bogus, fake. At the same time, the event was "staged" in the sense that people were "placed, timing was set," a camera crew was engaged, publicists can be seen scampering around, the press was invited (and positioned), and so on. That is all true, but it does not detract from the bona fides of the applause. And to suggest otherwise betrays an obliviousness to from what this city and its theatre community has been going through for 14 months and will continue to go through for another 4. Yes, the performance will also be "staged" on both sides of the 4th wall, but that doesn't mean what is recorded is not real. The more I read some of these comments, the more I wonder how many people on here are not legitimate lovers of the theatre.

Fosse, I don't know what to tell you. There was a vetted audience of 3 or 4 hundred people, socially distanced. They were as I said, industry people, friends, and family. They had to show proof of vaccination. The show offered free Covid tests that had to be taken 2 days in advance, or they could get their own done. It was an "actual" audience, whatever that means. Masked, vaxxed, and tested. I'm sorry that they didn't call you.

Couldn't say: an abundance of caution? What I can say is that the cast, crew and musicians were quarantined last week. They were put up in hotels, and literally escorted, in groups, from hotel to theater and back again . I have been a member here for a long time, but I seldom post, and I never post rumors. I am not making any of this up.

Your information is usually solid, but this time, not to be harsh, to use your word, you were apparently out of the loop on this one. That there was a a "planned" aspect to it is only your perception. You weren't there.
Once your show returns, if it does, you can ask around. I'm speaking the truth here. They made magic 
eta: Hogan explained the "staged" aspect well, I think. An event happened. It was captured, inside the theater and out. It was real and genuine,

What are film set capacities in NYC right now? I imagine they would get away with calling this a film set, and not a "Arts & Entertainment Venue".

I'm curious. Are they required to bring back the current cast for filming or could they have brought back the originals who were part of the cast/show when it was nominated for Tony's, etc? Or does it matter??
I realize some left, but I wondered if the orig cast had right to be in any future filming.

OK so let me make sure I am following. Now that your career as an expert assuring us that there would not be an audience at all has been derailed, you have suddenly become not only an expert on protocols for film shoots, with an entire agency backing you up. LOL Maybe this would be a good time for you to fade into the woodwork until these memories have abated.

The film shoot occurred in a Broadway theatre with stringent protocols and without the house staff, it was logical to assume that there would be no audience.
While I was a bit blithe about my agency's jurisdiction, requests from my agency to local authorities are always heeded by local authorities. And I don't need to be "backed up," my authorization is more than enough. The fact you are impotent in your job doesn't mean others aren't more successful.

I asked someone on Facebook and they said it was a mix of current and prior cast members! Like Jenn Colella came back for the filming.
