See, I've seen very many shows, including Sweeney Todd. I loved Patti, but not as much as I loved Kelli. See I have a feeling that many people go into Sweeney too see the legend, and, as a result, make out Patti better than she actually was. She was good, but I feel like we are giving her WAY to much credit for playing two notes on a tuba. Especially since, like I said in a previous post, Patti has played this role many times.

The fact that this thread is as long as it is, nuff said. As for O'Hara, I've not seen the PG but if her work hasn't drastically improved since SSOS and Dreckula, than sorry, I'm with other's who just don't get her. And she always seems rather cold. It's going to either LaChanze or Lupone. This is for best actress in a musical NOT, prom queen.

I agree with the fact that patti has played this role many times, so she must have really gotten under the skin of her character. She isn't a goddess. neithe ris Kelli.
But shouldn't the Tony's be about talent, not a popularity/Sondheim contest?
Just saying...

Are you implying that Patti - or any other of the nominees for that matter - lacks talent JustaBroadwayBaby2? If you are, that's pretty bold... and completely unjustified. I hope I'm just misunderstanding you (and I very well could be).

Personally, I measure talent as to how well an actor/actress "gets under the skin of" his or her character. Maybe that's just me. I want to see that kind of transformation.

I'm sorry, Al Dente, I don't quite get what you mean. You're saying that if Kelli O'Hara hasn't improved since the last two shows you saw her in, both of which were at least two years ago and both of which were horrible, than you don't get what is so special about her? Well, did you see her in LITP? She was wonderful in that, because she was given wonderful material. Despite popular belief it is extremely difficult to be great in a mediocre show, and practically impossible in a terrible one.

I love Kelli, loved her in LITP and loved her in Pajama Game. She's got a gorgeous voice and proved everyone wrong that she was versatile enough to play Babe Williams, rather than be subjected to type-casting as the ingenue. I'd love for her to win, though I doubt she will and I wouldn't mind if any of the other nominees won, either. It happens to be a very VERY strong race this year.

EXACTLY WICKEDFAN!!! How can you judge her work based on Dracula?? She was AMAZING in LITP and she WAY outshone the rest of the Pajama Game cast, including Harry, who I didn't particularly care for.

Also, Broadwaybaby, I feel the same way about your nominees, except replace Harry with John Lloyd young (my love). Also, I thought LaChanze was good for the role, but TERRIBLE musically. She was so pitchy when I saw her.

Harry is /my/ love. Lol. but the only problem with Lachanze is that she's PRETTY!
EVERYONE calls Celie ugly. She was pretty!
Or, at least, you know, not hideous. re: The Early 'Kelli Shoulda Won The Tony' Thread
The race is going to be very strong! I hate saying there are locks! I hate facing reality! Screw that! A girl can dream, can't she?

What's to get Wickedfan? It's exactly what I said and as I think this thread and it's originator are ridiculous, i'm not going to contibute to it anymore. If you still don't "get it", pm me. Unless she's had a tremendous change and growth as an actress and as a singer, I can't imagine her taking the Tony from Lupone or LaChanze. Two far more seasoned and consistent actors (IMO).

Al Dente- You are aware that Lachanze and Kelli have done the exact same number of Broadway shows, yes? (6 each). I wouldn't for a minute call LeChanze more seasoned, and NEVER would I call her more consistent. Everytime I see her, she's off pitch by a mile.

A nomination means something. It's a record of an accomplishment. The win can be by a thread, or can be by a wide margin, but the win goes down as a win. Kelli's runner up finish as a featured actress in a musical goes down in history where it ended up -- as an accomplishment. Her work in PJGame may very well end up the same way. Patti comes into this role in a triumphant return. The weight of that is major. Consider what happened to Michael Crawford in his Dance of the Vampire 'return". The risk paid up. Chita's work can best be summed up as an accomplishment. I see Kelli the end of the month and look forward to the spark and effortlessness she undoubtedbly is bringing to the role. Tony worthy, but perhaps, yet again, not Tony winning. But it goes down in history and will be remembered. Sometimes it is about a culmination of worthy performances more so than a particular one -- when it comes down to a thread. All in all, it makes for a great Tony show. As Mr. Irwin proved for us last year.

Well, it IS your opinion, Al Dente. So I can't trash it, it's not like it's fact or anything.

Just, isn't that what actors are supposed to do? Grow and mature and get better over time? I must admit I never saw Kelli in Dracula. So I don't know how she was in that. For all I know, she was horrible. But she brought tears to my eyes in LITP, and she livened up the stage in Pajama Game.

When I saw Sweeney, Patti was in fine form vocally, but I couldn't understand a word she said and could hardly understand what she sang in "A Little Priest". I love Patti, and I know that THAT is partly what she's "known for"-that being rather messy diction ever since she was a Broadway legend in 1980. As for LaChanze, I never liked her singing voice. Not then, not now. I guess you're correct when you say that they're both consistent.

Sorry, Broadwaybaby, but Al Dante has made it clear he does not want a catfight. So I guess you'll have to pack up your popcorn and start a "Tarzan was robbed!" thread if you want a REAL catfight.

Kelli is a perfect example of what the musical theater women of yesterday were...talented, beautiful and versatile. She brings a certain amount of glamour to each of her roles.

But what people seems to forget is the depth and demands of each of these roles. Would someone who played "Piazza" so easily have shifted into the light-hearted manner of PJ? It's not as easy as it looks.

I wouldn't be surprised of the Tony voters remember this come voting time. The fact that she has shown more versatility than many of the other nominees is a glaring fact. It takes more than belting out a tune to make a character.

Also, PJ game is FEEL-GOOD. This might come up again. This role is so much more of a belty, strong-bouncy, cute without wanting me to vomit role. So I mean, there are plenty of reasons why she will win, and probably some stuff from tony voters that will make her not win.
Surprise us, tony board, surprise us!

Do you get it now?! LOL!
Just trying to keep it fun.
Knowing Kelli she would hate people fighting over all of this.
She places much less importance on it than is being displayed here. BELIEVE ME. She is thrilled to be nominated. It is an honor for her and that's how she sees it.
I wish that's how it could be for everyone on the outside too.
I am very happy for her for getting a nomination! Lets not cheapen that.

No actually, she wouldn't want NEGATIVE attention where her peers are being bashed.

Was that some sort of reference to her teacher?
