I can't really compare all three because every actor, although playing the same part, has their own acting, dancing and singing style. Seeing all three in person has been an experience and love all three casts' performances.
JLY's cast has been doing JB for over two years, not counting the actors in LaJolla, who are the most seasoned in playing Nick (Bob Spencer - Very strong stage presence and great bass tone), Tommy (Christian Hoff - Great comic relief and tough guy personna) and Bob (Daniel Reichard - Closest to Bob and definitely projects his voice with no effort). JLY is an ultimate professional and very considerate to fans in person.....
Chris's cast experienced, and catching on very, very well, considering having to move from SF to CT, to LA in a short time. Chris is excellent and passionate as Frankie, Michael (soon to be with Chicago's cast) is a great "Ringo", playing Nick. Erich is "spot on" as Bob and Deven's comic relief and tough guy personna playing Tommy rounds out this great cast.
Jarrod's cast is just as good as the other two..... They have Steve Gouveia (switching with Michael Ingersoll 7-15), who began his JB career in LaJolla, an award winner in Jeremy Kushnier, Drew Gehling, a young but seasoned actor and Jarrod (called "too good" for American Idol), who's been in entertainment since elementary school age.
Lizzie took the words right out of my mouth. And TimeSuckage I wasn't accusing you of being a broadway snob. Actually it's great to have someone from LA post their thoughts, commplimentary or not, on the show in this thread, But that thread about the LA cast apperance on the Tonight Show turned ugly. And as Lizzie mentioned, folks who have only seen the OBC were crapping on people who have only seen the show in SF and it evolved into a thread basically saying people who live on the West Coast suck. And the comments were coming from people who haven't seen both casts live. I don't mind comparisions of actors playing the same role, as long as the person making the comparison has actully seen both actors performing onstage.
Edit: Deven May doesn't say the Siberia line Aww they took it out in LA too. I mentioned it to Steve that it was one of my favorite lines in the show the first time I saw the current cast in SF because I noticed it was gone. He said its been poping in and out of the show since LaJolla. Maybe it'll pop back up with the Vegas cast.
Thanks for the clarifications, Lizzie and mll85. I am the last person to pull East Coast rank on theater. West Coast got Angels in America before NYC, we just got Curtains and Drowsy, and we got JB first...
I don't believe for a second that the LA/SF audiences are unsophisticated at all. I do think that the universal appeal of the 4 Seasons songs may bring people in who might not be interested in a more traditional musical (like a Les Mis or even a Curtains), but I think they're going to be a tougher audience because they want to see their fave group done justice.
Haven't said anything about the AIDS Walk in a while, so link below. They keep upping the goal. Yay!
mll85, turn your PMs back on!

Agreed! They must be doing something, right, though, since they've done so well with people who aren't exact replicas -- of either the real Seasons or the OBC. (I don't mean that defensively, either. I know Wicked's doing something right and that's certainly not my favorite show!) SF Jersey Boys AIDS Walk

Jarrod Spector, Steve Gouveia, Drew Gehling, and Jeremy Kushnier will be at Macy's at Union Square. They'll be signing complimentary posters and CD samplers.
Just got back from Macy's -- it was kind of chaotic, but fun. I get the feeling Macy's wasn't really prepared for the crowd. But it was nice to see all four of them together when they weren't on stage or at the stage door.

Where did we hear that Steven M. ISN'T going on for Sunday evening? I'm going to be out of town, but I had two minions that were going to try and catch it...
At 11AM, we stood in line with about five other fans, of which we recognized two from the past SF appearances. They set a table and sound system up in front of their main escalator bank for the Jersey Boys. By 11:45, the line swelled to over 150 fans and beyond. 10 minutes later, we were treated to the sight of their publicist leading….. drum roll please….. Jarrod Spector, Jeremy Kushnier, Andrew Gehling and Steve Gouveia through the store towards us!!!!! All “Four Seasons!!!!! They all had the same type of red “Jersey Boys” shirts as worn during the SF Pride Parade and wore stickers advertising the upcoming AIDS Walk SF. They all greeted us as they walked towards the signing area, especially Steve, who is probably used to so many public appearances since the early days in LaJolla.
The Macy’s staff passed CD samplers of the OBC cast to us for them to sign, and as we got to the table, the Jersey Boys recognized my two sons and I from frequenting the stage door after the many shows we’ve attended.
1st was Jeremy Kushnier (Tommy), who we thanked for leading SF’s AIDS Walk team, and invited us to meet them at the walk on July 15th. 2nd was Jarrod Spector (Frankie), who we thanked for the many memorable performances that entertained us, but we were honored when he thanked us for the many shows we’ve watched to support the various casts. 3rd up was Andrew Gehling (Bob), who is just as humble as we remember from the stage door, but was soaking all of the adoration and recognizing their fans in a very friendly way. Last up was Steve Gouveia (Nick), who is Mr. Cool, Calm and Collected, and such a friendly celebrity, which is a rarity when tons of other stars tend to keep private and distance themselves from fans. I mentioned we’ll miss him in SF, were honored to have someone from the original LaJolla/B’Way cast perform here at the Curran and he graciously thanked us for our support. They all are class acts and ultimate professionals!
We hung out for a while longer while soaking in the atmosphere and knowing that we’re fortunate to have a Tony Winning play here in San Francisco. Thanks to the Jersey Boys for their appearance at Macy’s SF!
Correction: Steven Goldsmith will be going on this Sunday Eve. July 1. Due to the theater going dark on July 4th there will be two shows on Sunday July 8th in which John Michael will be appearing at his regular matinee and Jarrod will be doing the evening show. Sorry for the confusion.
"My only decent photo (it was harder than I thought it'd be)."
I just got home, and haven't checked them out yet, but I should have some nice pics. I took my lil sisters with me, so I let them handle the cameras (better than having them ask me when we're leaving =)
Thanks mll85!!!!! Grumpita had the best and clearest photos so far from the meet & greet, and I was totally satisfied with the turnout! I'm hoping that this will definitely boost up the fan base, and Jeremy & Co. invited every fan to say "hi" to them at the AIDS Walk.
Hard Rock Cafe, Borders, Cody's, Macy's plus the AIDS Walk gives the fans a chance to meet the cast and get to know them better. It's beneficial to draw in all new fans even though there's just over a couple of months left in the 2nd Tour's SF run. That way, they won't have to "rush" the theatre during the last week.
I hope they hold more public appearances before the end of the run in SF. It will definitely help Jersey Boys stay totally popular and will spread the word for others to check the show out.
Nice photos Grumpita. I was able to stop by the event yesterday. The crowd was bigger then I expected, although it did look like some people lining up just to line up and get stuff. You know that mob mentaltiy was working but there were alot of fans. I recognized a few people that I've seen in rush line or at the theater before. But let's just hope that those people who just lined up just to line up end up lining up at the box office for tickets and the grosses will continue to increase.
It was true about the people just wanting a free cd, playbill or lobby card just for the sake of having one..... I'd say that at least 3/4 of the crowd there either saw the show already or knew about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. You could tell because they had questions for the cast and also greeted them by name. It was special for both my twin sons because between the both of them, they've watched the show three times each and will watch them again after the AIDS Walk on the 15th. The "Boys" recognized my sons from their encounters at the stage door and thanked them for their support because they always wear their "Jersey Boys" gear wherever they go.
One passersby asked my son who the "Jersey Boys" were, and after my son answered "they are stars in a Tony Award winning musical Broadway play", she said, "gosh, I thought they were part of a baseball team....." This was pretty funny, and would have cracked up the cast, if it happened within earshot of their table.
I also hope that word of mouth will spread from attendees of this past Macy's appearance. Friends, family, clients, significant others and repeat Jersey Boys fans will definitely love the onstage experience watching the Four Season's lives and career unfold in front of our eyes.
